“GAME OF THRONES gave us the correct two-legged sigils for the first four seasons and most of the fifth, but when Dany’s fleet hove into view, all the sails showed four-legged dragons. Someone got sloppy, I guess. Or someone opened a book on heraldry, and read just enough of it to muck it all up. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.”
“A couple years on, HOUSE OF THE DRAGON decided the heraldry should be consistent with GAME OF THRONES.. but they went with the bad sigil rather than the good one. That sound you heard was me screaming, “no, no, no.” Those damned extra legs have even wormed their way onto the covers of my books, over my strenuous objections.”

September 2024: The Maelor controversy
In September 2024, Martin published a now-deleted blog post titled “Beware the Butterflies.” He detailed his disagreement with showrunner Ryan Condal over the decision to remove Prince Maelor from the show. Martin explained that Condal initially told him in 2022 about the plan to remove Maelor for practical reasons, including budget constraints. Martin wrote: “
It’s simplest, yes, and may make sense in terms of budgets and shooting schedules. But simpler is not better … Maelor by himself means little. He is a small child, does not have a line of dialogue, does nothing of consequence but die… but where and when and how, that does matter.”
The author outlined how Maelor’s absence could affect future plot points and character motivations. He hinted at more issues, writing:
“And there are larger and more toxic butterflies to come, if House of the Dragon goes ahead with some of the changes being contemplated for seasons three and four …”
Ryan Condal’s Response
Addressing the Changes
On the official House of the Dragon podcast, showrunner Ryan Condal spoke about the challenges of adapting the book. Regarding Maelor, Condal said:
“The casualty in that was that our young children in this show are very young. Very, very young. Because we compress that timeline. So those people could only have children of a certain age and have it be believable where it didn’t feel like we weren’t hewing to the realities of the passage of time and the growth of children in any real way.”
Collaboration with Martin
Condal emphasized his collaboration with Martin, saying:
“The writing that we do on the show is always available to [Martin]. The things that we create and do, we show casting tapes and cuts, and when there are art department presentations we put together before the start of a season, everything is made available to him. And I’ve always taken aboard his feedback wherever possible.”
The Challenges of Adaptation
The showrunner highlighted the difficulties of adapting books for television, saying:
“Television just moves. It’s a giant moving train, and it’s very heavy. And even though it takes two years to make the show, it happens very fast. The job of showrunning is making a million decisions, and then a season of television appears at the end of it.”

HBO’s Response
Official Statement
HBO released a statement defending the show’s creative team, stating:
“Commonly, when adapting a book for the screen, with its own format and limitations, the showrunner ultimately is required to make difficult choices about the characters and stories the audience will follow. We believe that Ryan Condal and his team have done an extraordinary job and the millions of fans the series has amassed over the first two seasons will continue to enjoy it. There are few greater fans of George R.R. Martin and his book ‘Fire & Blood’ than the creative team on ‘House of the Dragon,’ both in production and at HBO.”
Casey Bloys’ comments about Martin
Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, also commented on the matter. Martin’s complaints surfaced during an interview when Deadline asked Bloys about the Emmy Award potential for House of the Dragon, especially since Season 2 sparked some differing opinions among fans. Bloys said:
“Well, I’m not sure that the fans were divided over Season 2.”
When the publication specifically brought up Martin, Bloys responded:
“Yes, maybe one fan was. But no, the show did really, really well. I expect that will be in competition.”
