Harry Collett thought Jacaerys would die in House of the Dragon Season 2

House of the Dragon Season 2 finale left fans with many unanswered questions, but a burning concern remains for those who’ve read George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood”. Why did Prince Jacaerys Velaryon was defied the source material’s fate? The young dragon rider, played by Harry Collett, surprisingly survived the season’s end, contrary to the book’s narrative. As the war ahead intensifies, Jace’s unexpected survival raises questions about his future role in the battle for the Iron Throne.

 Jacaerys’ survives Season 2

In the novel, Jace leads the dragonseeds in the Battle of the Gullet, a pivotal dragon-vs-ship fight, but ultimately meets his demise. However, the show’s finale postponed this battle and ended with a montage of both sides preparing for war. With Alicent’s promise to Rhaenyra, the stage is set for a thrilling confrontation, as Rhaenyra gears up to reclaim King’s Landing and the Iron Throne. In an interview with Variety, Harry Collett said,

“I did think this would be it for me and Jace. And it’s always that awkward moment of going to the script reading going, ‘Oh, I don’t know if this is the time, and am I gonna have to do this in front of everyone?’ But it got to the point where we read the last episode in the script read, and it was just a surprise. I went up to Ryan, and I was like, ‘Dude, I thought this was it? I thought I was gonna die!”

Will Jacaerys’ fate follow the books?

Harry Collett, the actor who plays Jace Velaryon, assumed Jace would meet his demise in the Season 2 finale, just like in the books. But, during the table read, he was surprised to find out Jace lives on! Collett revealed that he even asked showrunner Ryan Condal about it, joking that he would’ve appreciated a “death call” to prepare him. Now, with Season 3 on the horizon, Collett is tight-lipped about Jace’s future, saying “the death call stays between me and me only” – leaving fans wondering if book fate will eventually catch up with Jace.

Collett said, “I said to Ryan, ‘I thought this was my time.’ And he said, ‘Mate, I would have called you!’ You get something called ‘the death call,’ so you don’t have to do it at the script read in front of everybody, which I think is very nice.”

“So I was just stressing for no reason, but I’m so thankful that I’ve got to last a whole other season. And if I die, I die — I’m thankful to be in it anyway.”
