Joffrey had spoiled the death of key House of the Dragon character in Game of Thrones

Fans of House of the Dragon may be surprised to discover that a scene from Game of Thrones featuring Joffrey Baratheon spoils a major plot point in the prequel series. Since Game of Thrones happens many years after House of the Dragon, the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons is a famous event in the history of Westeros.

Many descendants of the land, especially the nobles, study this historical event. Shireen Baratheon, the daughter of Stannis, also talks about the Dance of the Dragons in a scene in Game of Thrones. Similarly, King Joffrey, one of the most hated characters in Game of Thrones, reveals the fate of Rhaenyra Targaryen during a conversation with Margaery Tyrell. This revelation has gained renewed attention as viewers realize its implications for the prequel series.

Joffrey’s revelation in Game of Thrones

In a scene from Game of Thrones Season 3, Episode 4, Joffrey Baratheon takes Margaery Tyrell on a tour of the Great Sept of Baelor. During the tour, Joffrey points out the tombs of various Targaryens and mentions the gruesome death of Rhaenyra Targaryen. He explains that her brother Aegon II killed her and fed her to his dragon. This offhand comment reveals how Rhaenyra meets her end in Fire and Blood.

Many were surprised to learn that the show casually mentioned such a major spoiler. Some fans feel disappointed by the spoiler. However, considering how House of the Dragon handles character deaths and important moments, we may still have surprises in store. For example, the show changed a major death in Season 1 when Ser Laenor Velaryon escaped to Lys instead of dying through assassination as reported in Fire and Blood. However, in the annals of history and for all intents and purposes, he is dead in Westeros.

Similarly, at the end of the season, Aemond’s killing of Lucerys is somewhat of an accident, whereas, in the book, he kills him on purpose and even celebrates his death with Aegon later. All of this leaves us wondering how accurate the information in this fictitious historical account is and how much the House of the Dragon series will adapt.

Given this, Joffrey’s spoiler may not end up being a spoiler at all. Fans have many wild theories like Rhaenyra could have escaped and reappeared in Game of Thrones as a different character by staying alive through magic. Some believe that she is the mysterious Quaithe whom Daenerys met in Qarth. We will not know how the showrunners choose to play it until we see the finale of House of the Dragon.
