Showrunner Ryan Condal reveals why House of the Dragon Season 2’s opening credits changed

Season 2 of House of the Dragon is almost here. The show is a prequel set before the events of Game of Thrones. Season 1 set up the conflict between the two factions of the Targaryen family, the Blacks and the Greens. Season 2 will launch into the Dance of the Dragons civil war.

Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen leads the Blacks, and King Aegon II Targaryen leads the Greens. The two sides will vie for their claim on the Iron Throne.

Season 2 will see many changes in how the story is told. Most importantly, we won’t have timejumps like in season 1. The story will be told in a much more linear fashion. Besides this, reports state that a new version of the opening credits for Season 2 will be added. Showrunner Ryan Condal commented further on adding this new intro during a Season 2 press roundtable.

Ryan Condal explains the new House of the Dragon opening credits

Ryan Condal explained how important the Dance of the Dragons is in the universe of Westeros. He also commented on how Game of Thrones fans are used to seeing the opening credits evolve every season. Condal stated:

“We did decide to go with the new main title sequence this year,” Condal said. “When we were looking at the sequence we did in season one, which I think works very well, it was visually dynamic and interesting, but it was really about—it was essentially a family tree. It was about the bloodlines of this generational family that begins with Viserys and then goes down through Rhaenyra and Alicent and then on to the generation of their children.”

“The family is kind of set at [this] point “Game of Thrones loves an evolving title sequence, and we just didn’t really know where to go with it from there. So the idea was, if the first season was about ancestry and bloodlines, season two is now about [being part of] this living history, this period that becomes very seismic, both in this time and then for all the decades to come. This is such a famous time in history that even characters in the A Song of Ice and Fire books are thinking back to the Dance of the Dragons, which is the most brutal and bloody civil war fought in this time.”

Despite the changes, the iconic Game of Thrones music composed by Ramin Djawadi will remain the same. House of the Dragon Season 2 will premiere on June 16 on HBO and Max.
