The Last of Us showrunner hints at an even bigger budget for Season 2

The second season of HBO’s mega-hit The Last of Us is currently stuck in pre-production. There is no denying that the series has exceeded many expectations, making it one of HBO’s most costly yet undoubtedly successful projects. The writers’ strike, however, has delayed production, so fans might need to wait a little longer for Season 2.

The Last of Us Season 2 might have an even bigger budget

It has been known from the beginning of its production that The Last of Us was going to be one of the most expensive shows ever for HBO. Showrunner Craig Mazin recently hinted that Season 2 will have an even bigger budget, once it begins filming:

“There’s always a budget bump, and then there’s a discussion about why it’s not enough of a budget bump. For as long as I’ve been doing this, I have never, ever, not once, been in a situation where I was like, “What I need is this,” and they’re like, “OK!” It eventually gets to this (holds hands at same level), so I’m not concerned about that.”

The Last of Us and its possibility of going beyond Season 2

Mazin reflected on the possibility of future seasons of the show, “Even if we have a principal debate about what is required to execute a second season, a third season, a fourth season, what I always know is that they are always working in good faith and appreciate the creative value of the show. It’s not a bloodless, business-only decision for them. Maybe on some level there are people for whom it is, but not for [Casey Bloys and Francesca Orsi]. They care and want to back us up.”
