Not everyone enjoyed Season 8 of Game of Thrones. The season’s conclusion split the fan base in two. One was happy with the resolution, while the other sought a new season. Some have attributed this to the lack of the next novels by George R. R. Martin. Some also cited the showrunners’ aroused interest in working with Disney’s Lucasfilm to start a Star Wars trilogy as a contributing factor. However, it might’ve been Martin himself behind one of the most controversial choices.

George R. R. Martin revealed three shocking twists to Game of Thrones showrunners

Though Martin’s contribution to Game of Thrones’ TV adaptation gradually diminished, the showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss did go to him at times. In a 2016 interview with EW, they talked about “three holy sh– moments” that Martin told them about.

What were the three holy s*hit moments George R. R. Martin talked about?

The first was Stannis Baratheon sacrificing his daughter Shireen, which was shown in the fifth season of the show. The second was the heart-wrenching backstory of Hodor. Since introducing the character in A Game of Thrones, the first book in the series, Martin has been aware of the full significance of Hodor’s name. When asked about the third, Benioff said:

“… is from the very end…”

This implies Martin had a vision for his series’ end, which he told the showrunners. It might very well have been the one the duo showed on the screen towards the end of Season 8.
