New House of the Dragon behind-the-scenes clip reveals the making of Dark Sister
One of the best elements of any Game of Thrones production is the quality and hours of work that goes into prop and set design. Perhaps one of the most famous Valyrian steel swords of all time, the Dark Sister sits right up there with Blackfyre as one of the blades that saw the rise of Targaryen supremacy in Westeros. In a recent clip released by HBO, the House of the Dragon swordsmith explained how the sword was made for the screen.
Dark Sister was cast with Damascus Steel for the show
Tim Lewis, the master armorer, was in charge of overseeing the sword’s construction from conception to completion on House of the Dragon, with Peter Johnsson, a swordsmith, forging the actual blade. Johnsson wanted Dark Sister to appear as though it belonged to a more “intricate and advanced” era while keeping in mind the history of the character. He used the famously challenging to work with and renowned for its complex patterns Damascus steel to cast the blade.

Lewis claimed that he and his colleagues created 15 “rubbers,” or floppy duplicates made of rubber, along with three aluminium reproductions of the Dark Sister. It was done in order to give Matt Smith more flexibility while doing his sword-fighting scenes, and possibly as memorabilia once the show is over.
