George R.R. Martin on his writing style:”I’m a slow and painstaking writer”

George R.R. Martin‘s highly acclaimed book series A Song of Ice and Fire might not have been as popular worldwide back when it first came out, but after it was recreated as a TV show in the form of Game of Thrones, we’ve heard the author’s name almost on a daily basis. Martin has also contributed to the writing world through many other books and an elongated book series called Wild Cards, which tells the story of the earth having been ravaged by an alien virus, killing most and granting some enormous power. The book series, whose 23rd book is to release this year, is written by different authors contributing in each volume, and Martin edits the same. Wild Cards is set to be made into a TV show as well, and Martin discussed about it during his recent appearance at WorldCon.

The TV series based on Wild Cards is to be adapted for television by NBC, but Martin has revealed that he won’t be involved with it as he has been with HBO for Game of Thrones. While explaining it to the Kansas City Star, he said, “I’ve got this show called “Game of Thrones” that’s on HBO, and I have a development deal with HBO, so I’m exclusively working with HBO. I’m not going to be directly involved with “Wild Cards,” unless, by some chance, it goes to HBO, in which case all bets are off.”

He also spoke about his writing style, and said that he’s a very slow writer, with long hours assigned to his work.

“ There’s not much I can tell you. It’s slow. I’m a slow and painstaking writer — always have been. Sometimes I don’t know how the hell I do it. I sit down, and on a good day stories come out. And on a bad day, I struggle and I read my email.”

If that’s the rate he’s going to progress on, it’ll be quite long until we see the next book in the series, The Winds of Winter come out. Needless to say, the wait is going to be very painful.
