Conleth Hill talks about how he originally auditioned for a different role in Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones has a long list of characters, and a magnificent cast to play them all, but some of them really stand out. If you ask is, for example, we would say that our personal favourite is Lord Varys, the eunuch, who is one of the (or perhaps even the) smartest in the series. Now, we all have seen Conleth Hill playing Varys, and we can’t imagine anybody else playing him, but Conleth apparently auditioned for another character in the series, and had that gone through, we would have an entirely different version of Game of Thrones, altogether. He talked about this, and more, in an interview with The Huffington Post. Read on!
There had been a rumor that Conleth first tried out for the role of Robert Baratheon, and Conleth has finally confirmed it. Speaking when asked if the rumor was true, he said :
“It is true, to be honest, but I have to say that I came out of the meeting, which went all right, and looked who was in after me, saw who it was, and went, “Well, he’d be all right for it,” and he was, and he got it. You know, that’s showbiz.”
Conleth was referring to Mark Addy, who ended up playing Robert Baratheon. When asked if he read for Varys’ character as well, Hill said :
“I read for it, parts of the dungeon scene with Ned and the chest scene where he explains how he was made from sort of a slave to the security of Westeros, and I think once I had already accepted the part, they said, “How do you feel about shaving your head?””
The interviewer then asked Conleth about his weirdest fan experience, and Conleth recalled :
“I’ve been very lucky. Most “Game of Thrones” fans are well-mannered and courteous. I have no trouble taking photos with people if they want it. I think the weirdest one was someone came running toward me with their hand in my crotch area, saying, “I wanted to see if something’s really there.””
He then explained that the fan didn’t actually make contact.
Conleth has played a variety of characters in his 30 years of acting. We even saw him in the legal drama Suits, where he sported a full head of hair. Silver hair. He now stars in a thriller film titled ‘A Patch of Fog’, where he has hair, as well. When asked about how it was to play a character with hair, for a change, Hill said :
“It’s seasonal. I cut it out and then it grows back. A bit colder this year because it’s a little bit later, filming well into the winter, but it’s just what I looked like before.”
Hill is also preparing for a new West End play titled “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” We will get to see The Spider return when Game of Thrones does, this summer. Until then, maybe we can binge on something that has Conleth Hill with some hair on, for a change.
