What is Blade Runner 2099?
Blade Runner 2099 is a new American sci-fi TV miniseries, following the movies Blade Runner (1982) and Blade Runner 2049 (2017). The Blade Runner franchise started from Philip K. Dick’s 1968 novel, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” featuring the character Rick Deckard. This novel has been turned into many forms of media, including movies, comics, a stage play, and a radio series. The first movie adaptation, Blade Runner, was directed by Ridley Scott in 1982. A novelisation and comic adaptation came out the same year.
Since 2011, Alcon Entertainment has owned the Blade Runner franchise in all media formats. A sequel movie, Blade Runner 2049, came out in 2017. A short film was released for Blade Runner’s 30th anniversary in 2012. More short films appeared before Blade Runner 2049, showing events between 2019 and 2049. The Blade Runner series has been essential in creating the cyberpunk genre.
In November 2021, Ridley Scott announced that a pilot episode and plans for ten episodes had been written. By February 2022, the series title was confirmed as Blade Runner 2099 and was being developed for Amazon Prime Video.
