The spectacular cast of Game of Thrones is not just spectacular on-screen. We have heard a lot about the stars wanting to do good, living their lives as responsible citizen, like Nikolaj Coster-Waldauworking with Googleto create Global Warming awareness, to Emilia Clarkewritingabout women equality, and more. We recently reported about the actor who played the young Hodor on Game of Thrones, was running for office with a hope of bringing about change. We are now hearing that his elder version is doing the same. Kristian Nairn, who plays Hodor on the show, has said that he might enter politics over Northern Ireland’s stance on LGBT rights. Read on!
Talking to the Belfast Telegraph, Kristian Nairn talked about how Northern Ireland’s failure to bring in a law that makes gay marriage legal, was a disgrace. Expressing his frustration over the issue, he said :
“I really don’t understand why we’re the only little enclave of the country that can’t do it. I hope that we can come into line with the rest of Europe and the rest of the United Kingdom and Ireland.
There’s so much other horrible s*** happening in the world at the minute, I think it’s the least of their worries. I think we need to get it sorted out as soon as possible.
I don’t see why people are so concerned at what other people do behind closed doors or in their lives.”
Kristian lives on the outskirts of Lurgan, with his mother, who works for the Rainbow Project, a support service for gay and bisexual men. He said that he wouldn’t consider joining politics, since the current rulers aren’t doing much good :
“Of course I have had thoughts about going into politics. I certainly don’t mean now, definitely not, but in the future who knows? It seems the DUP who are, or were, the predominant party, haven’t exactly done my community any favours.
I definitely would be prepared to make the change myself if it’s going to help my community and help other people. I’ve thought about running for office for later in life, not for now. I definitely have something to say.
I don’t want anything wildly different to what we have now. It’s just making sure that everyone’s treated equally. Is that so progressive? I don’t think it’s progressive, I think it’s human. And not just gay people – women’s rights, immigrants, people of different ethnic backgrounds.
I just don’t see why people are treated differently or with a different set of rules. It’s just wrong.”
Kristian also talked about how he believed that the Church and State need to be separated even further, in Northern Ireland, and well as everywhere else. He criticized the power of religion, and how it is unfair that a belief system that allows you to judge how other people exists. He also commented that politics needs to stay separate from the Church as religion doesn’t really need to have any stake in how a government is run.
We feel like Kristian Nairn has some good views on the topic, and probably would make some real progress, if he indeed decides to get in the mix. What do you think? Tell us in the comments, below!
