Game of Thrones is one of the most popular shows on the planet, as we have heard before, it is also one of the most pirated ones. Now, we know that the show, being so famous, has always been subject to leaks. We have seen quite a lot of leaks come from the show, ranging from the time the first four episodes of Season 5 leaked before the season premiered, and recently, when the whole plot of Season 7 was leaked, which is yet to be proven legitimate. Now, with such susceptibility to leaks, the show takes secrecy very seriously, and we have learnt exactly how seriously that is. Gemma Whelan, who plays the role of Yara Greyjoy, was apparently almost fired because she announced her role on Game of Thrones. Read on!

With Game of Thrones Season 7 less than a week away, the cast interviews are at an all time high, and the recent one revealed quite an anecdote. Gemma Whelan recently spoke to The Times, about her character, and Game of Thrones, and she revealed how her announcing her gig on the show right after landing it, led to her almost getting fired. She recalled :

“The first lesson I learnt was when I first got the job. No one told me to keep quiet about it. I just thought it was normal to pop it on my Spotlight entry, so I wrote on my CV, ‘This summer Gemma will be playing Yara Greyjoy in Game of Thrones.’ And the internet went nuts. One of the lovely, lovely producers on Thrones called me into his office and said, ‘This is very serious. We almost can’t employ you because of this.’”

Ouch. She went on to talk about how she was convinced she couldn’t get the job in the first place, having mostly been in the comedy genre before :

“I watched all of season 1 and thought, there’s no way I’m going to get this. I’d done a couple of comedies, I was doing a bit of stand-up — but a big HBO series? Not on the cards. I’d been desperate to be seen for drama, because I really wanted to do both… but it’s quite hard to be considered in both categories sometimes, until you can prove yourself.”

Gemma discussed quite a few other things in the interview, so go check it out, here. What do you think about this? Looks like any new cast members we might see in Game of Thrones Season 8 will not be prematurely announced, judging by this anecdote. What do you think? Talk to us in the comments, down below!
