Game of Thrones is a show that has changed the entire facade of television, and as such it has been honored with awards for it’s achievements. Now, the show has had a fair share of regular awards, but now it seems like it will be given one for its contribution to television on the whole. The British Academy For Television Arts, which is the organization behind the BAFTA Awards, has announced that they will be giving Game of Thrones a BAFTA Special Award. Read on!

In a new report, Variety has reported that the production team behind Game of Thrones will be given a BAFTA Special Award at the 2018 British Academy Television Craft Awards scheduled to be held on April 22:

Hannah Murray (Gilly) and John Bradley (Samwell Tarly) will receive the award at the ceremony. Here’s what the official description of the award reads:

“[The Special Award] is presented at the discretion of the Television Committee; therefore it may not be presented in any given year. Its purpose is to honor an individual or a team of craftspeople for outstanding creative contribution in the craft sector.”

David Benioff and Dan Weiss, the showrunners on Game of Thrones released a statement in response to the announcement:

“This award makes us extremely happy on behalf of the people who actually earned it – all our brilliant, talented, hard-working department heads and crew. Many, many people work insanely hard to create any film or television show. They are creators every bit as much as actors, writers, producers or directors, and deserve to be recognized as such.”

Krishnendu Majumdar, chair of BAFTA’s television committee, also commented:

“The craft behind what is one of the most popular dramas of our time is nothing short of incredible, from the breath-taking location shots to the intricately designed costumes and set pieces, and not forgetting the level of detail from the makeup and prosthetics team, to name a few. Huge congratulations to everyone involved.”

Game of Thrones is also up for a couple of regular BAFTAs, as we had reported, including Costume Design and Production design awards, so let’s hope they win. The ceremony, scheduled for 22nd April will be available to be streamed live from BAFTA’s YouTube and Twitter handles.
