Game of Thrones showrunners discuss the explosive concluding scene of the season 7 finale
Game of Thrones season 7 is over, you guys. It’s time to mourn. But also sit in awe because it was a bloody amazing season and an even more amazing finale episode. Not only was the entire episode a roller coaster ride, the final scene of it was nothing short of epic. We got to see the Night King riding undead Viserion. If that isn’t cause enough to blow our minds, then I don’t even know.
The episode ended with undead Viserion breaking the Wall down and what a sight it was to behold. The army of the Dead finally broke through into Westeros and we’re still trying to get over it. What, you may wonder, the show runners are doing now that they’ve successfully managed to destroy our brains? Well, they’re explaining the final scene in the Inside Game of Thrones video released after the finale.
Here’s what David Benioff said:“For many years now we’ve known this would be the ending of the penultimate season.”
“The wall’s kept these things out for eight thousand years and there’s no really reason it can’t keep doing that unless something puts a hole in the wall,”D.B Weiss added.“There’s one thing on the board from the beginning that is now big enough to do that and that’s a dragon. It just started to suggest itself as a logical way forward.”
Benioff and Weiss said that they wanted a much horrific season finale as opposed to season 6 which ended on Daenerys heading to Westeros.“We try to contrast the various season endings so that they don’t feel too similar,” said Weiss. “Last seasonhad a pretty triumphant ending with Dany finally sailing west towards Westeros. We wanted to contrast this with a much more horrific conclusion for Season 7.”
The final season of Game of Thrones supposedly might come out as late as 2019, so we’ve got a long wait, folks. For now, all we can do is rewatch season 7 and marvel at how glorious it was. There’s a lot more they discuss in the video about the key events of the finale episode. Watch it below:
