Game Of Thrones director suggests that Ed Sheeran's character wasn't roasted alive in the latest episode

Ed Sheeran got a lot of hate for his cameo in season 7 episode 1, “Dragonstone”. Fans weren’t too happy with the choice to cast the pop idol as a Lannister soldier. In fact, his brief appearance seems to be the most hated scene of the season so far. Sheeran even shut down his Twitter account after the episode, although he later claimed that his choice to leave Twitter was coincidental.
In an interview with Newsweek, director Jeremy Podeswa came out in defense of Sheeran, saying, “He was appropriate for the part because he needed to sing. If people didn’t know who Ed was, they wouldn’t have thought about it twice. The hoo-ha seems to be from things that are outside of the world of the show. In the world of the show he did a lovely job, and he looks like he belongs in that world.”
The source of the hatred did seem to be that fans felt shook out of their fantasy when a superstar appeared on screen. After singing a song, his line, “It’s a new one!” was a little too on the nose. The whole scene was a little overwrought, but served to humanize the Lannisters – something important considering the Loot Train battle and how many of the wound up burnt to a crisp.
But wait… Daenerys, Drogon, and the Dothraki hoard made short work of the Lannister army. Is it possible Ed Sheeran and his group were there? Could he have been one of the men who perished via dragon fire!?
This is what many fans wanted to know, hoping that the knowledge of the singer’s demise on the show would bring some satisfaction.
But don’t celebrate just yet. The Lannister soldiers said themselves that they were sent to keep the peace in the Riverlands after the Frey’s were slaughtered. And while it is possible that Jaime could have called for reinforcements far and wide, it’s unlikely that the small group would have been sought out.
Matt Shakman, director of “The Spoils of War”, spoke to Mashable saying, “I did not meet Ed Sheeran. … I don’t think literally those soldiers were there.”
It appears then that the redheaded Lannister singer is still at large. But in Game of Thrones death comes for everyone, so even Ed Sheeran isn’t safe for long!
