Ewan Mitchell says Aemond fired Alicent because “she’s his kryptonite”
Ewan Mitchell talks about Aemond removing Alicent from power.
In the latest episode of House of the Dragon, we saw a significant power shift. Alicent Hightower, who ruled the Small Council for so long, was removed by her son Aemond. Though Alicent ruled wisely with her father, Otto Hightower, by her side, the council decided to take her off during wartime. Ewan Mitchell spoke on the official House of the Dragon podcast about Aemond’s role as Prince Regent and shared insights into why Aemond made certain decisions.

Mitchell explained Aemond’s decision to fire Alicent. He said:
“And Aemond, he even sends his mother away. It’s like, Mom, I don’t want you at work. You let me do my job, let me win this war. And then when it’s through, we can make up.”
Mitchell was asked about the scene where Alicent spoke to Aemond after the council meeting. He went on to talk about the relationship between Aemond and Alicent and how it affected his decision. Mitchell said:
“Yeah. I think in that moment, he finally has that little bit of affection from his mom that he’s craved for so long, and he kind of– You know, one of the things that he does want, one of his objectives is, you know, is his mom. And whether or not, you know, his vision aligns with, you know, her idea of happiness is another thing. But I think Aemond– She is the kryptonite to that code. She challenges that.”
“And so it’s that thing of like, ‘I can’t function when you’re in the room with me, so you’ve got to go.’ Like, I need to– I can’t let my emotions get the better of me in this moment. This code has to– has to remain in place for me to do my job, so you’ve got to go. I love working with Liv Cooke as well. Like as Alicent, she can level you with her eyes, man.”
