“Is he still on my side?”: Ewan Mitchell explains Aemond and Aegon’s relationship after Battle of Rook’s Rest
Sneak peak at brotherly love!
House Targaryen has seldom been famous for brotherly love. The most recent examples of this failed relationship are Aegon II and his younger brother Aemond. Fans have always wondered whether these two truly love each other or are distant and cold as they keep each other at an arm’s length. Neither cared for the other and always focused more on belittling one another. It stands as a big question mark on their relationship as siblings.
Ewan Mitchell’s Panorama on Kingship
Aemond has always been wrapped up in his ambition and believes that he is better suited to be king than his brother. He likes to have dominion of his own. Aegon in episode 9 of House of The Dragon Season 1, has always mentioned the fact that he never had the urge to become a king. Rather he wanted to enjoy his leisure time and was seen slacking around. Being so far apart from each other, Ewan Mitchell in his interview with Variety said,
“It’s never been great between those two. Aemond has always seen Aegon as someone inferior who lacks the dedication and persistence to be king, whereas Aemond has always seen himself as — although he is the spare — that he should have been treated as the first son.
Aegon himself even says, in Episode 9 of Season 1, he has no wish to rule. You get the idea that he has no political ambition whatsoever. You can see how that might look to members of the small council, because that’s someone you might be able to control, and have some sway on their direction.

Aemond in power amidst Aegon’s support in question
With the tables turning around, Ewan Mitchell‘s dilemma stands straight whether the character of Aegon would support his brother Aemond or stand against him. “You may cuff him about as you wish at home, but in the world, we must defend our own”, these words by Alicent, might still be of use. Still, there is a chance of the brothers supporting each other. Despite Aemond brought suffering to his brother because of him feeling omnipotent and full of vengeance.
“Aemond has been serving the war from this side of the table. He goes to the other side, and he sees all of these other characters in a new perspective. How can they serve Aemond now? It’s somewhat similar to the relationship with Aegon. How can he serve me now that he’s in his bed, and he’s terribly crippled from what Aemond did to him in the skies above Rook’s Rest?
It raises the question of how much of a hindrance he might serve to me in the state that he’s in, and now with Aemond’s newfound power, will he get in the way? Is he still on my side? “
