Game of Thrones Season 8 is currently filming, and is expected to return in 2019. As we know, Season 7 had a total of 7 episodes, and Season 8 will have a total of 6 episodes. We had previously reported that some of the best Game of Thrones directors will return for Season 8, including Miguel Sapochnik, and in a new interview now, Director of Photography, Fabian Wagner, has revealed that Sapochnik will direct two of the six episodes. Read on!

Now, as we had reported, the directors for Season 8 will be Miguel Sapochnik, and David Nutter, while showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss will be directing the final episode of the show. However the breakdown of five episodes between the Sapochnik and Nutter, and now it seems like Sapochnik will be directing two, which means Nutter will get three.

Speaking to Collider, DoP Fabian Wagner, who has worked on Game of Thrones and Justice League, among many other projects, spoke about Game of Thrones and Season 8. When the interviewer pointed out that ‘Battle of the Bastards’, an episode directed by Sapochnik is great, Wagner said :

“It’s nice to hear someone say that because obviously “Battle of the Bastards” sort of became the big episode everyone talks about. But yeah, I personally really love “Winds of Winter.” I think it’s one of the most, you know, kind of almost finished episodes as everything comes together in that episode from beginning to end. We put a lot of prep work into that and kind of trying to work with all the characters and visually bring it all together for that season as a season finale, so that was really great fun.”

“I just loved the montage sequences and the music, which I thought kind of gave a new level to the music in Game of Thrones. Which I think it always great, but it kind of really stood out, I think, in that episode. Yeah, it was just wonderfully put together by Miguel Sapochnik, you know, he did a great job finishing that episode up.”

Now, Wagner is back on Game of Thrones for Season 8, and he revealed that he will be working with Sapochnik :

“I’m actually back on Game of Thrones right now for the last season. So I can’t really say much about it, but yeah, we’ve been prepping and we started shooting. It’s a very exciting season. I’m shooting again with Miguel, so we’re back together as a team and we’ve got a couple of very exciting episodes ahead of us. But I can’t, unfortunately, tell you anything about it.”

While Wagner didn’t give any more details, he revealed that they will be shooting Episode 3 and Episode 5 of Season 8. Now, Sapochnik has been known to handle the episodes with the big battle sequences, and the likes, and the second last episode of every season is known to be a banger, so we can expect some great episodes from Sapochnik and Wagner this time. This also means that we now know how the director breakdown for Season 8 is :

801, 802, 804 : David Nutter803, 805 : Miguel Sapochnik

806 : David Benioff and Dan Weiss
