Interview
Alys Rivers is potentially 400 years old, says actress Gayle Rankin
Could Alys Rivers really be Melisandre, then?
There are many parallels between House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, as they’re set in the same universe. Not only are there similarities between themes and story elements but you can also spot similarities between characters. One of the biggest examples of this is the parallels between Alys Rivers and Melisandre from Game of Thrones, played by Gayle Rankin from the GLOW fame, in House of the Dragon in Season 2.
None of us knew much about that character, except those that are already being revealed by the makers. However, Ranking recently uncovered the mystery regarding the age of the Alys Rivers, something the makers haven’t talked about yet.

Gayle Rankin reveals the potential age of Alys Rivers
Gayle Rankin doesn’t know the exact age of the Alys Rivers, but she estimated the age of the mystical character. According to Ranking, Alys Rivers might have been alive for potentially 400 years. However, she didn’t delve into the time period, leaving us in the dark about whether “400 years” has been said in the context of the present day of the story. In an interview with EW, she said the following:
“She’s someone who has all of this power, who’s been alive for potentially 400 years. How do we make her a person with a beating heart and wants and desires? I hope that’s felt inside of our exploration with her. They’ve done such a wonderful job by giving these characters, especially the female characters, a 360 experience, which isn’t always the case, instead of these really patriarchal stories.”
If Ranking is indeed estimating the age of the character in the present-day context, then there is a possibility that what we saw in episode 3 of the second Season isn’t her actual age, as was the case with Melisandre.
Speaking of similarities between Melisandre and Alys Rivers, there is a theory doing the rounds that Melisandre is Alys Rivers in House of the Dragons. Both the characters capable of using mysterious powers and being fiercely protective of their chosen men add fuel to the theory. Not just that, but this age confirmation could further support the theory. It’d be interesting to see if we ever get an answer to this from the makers, who don’t seem to be shying away from retconning certain bits of lore.
House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 4 will be aired next Sunday at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT on HBO and Max.
