Aemond makes a move for control of King’s Landing in House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 5

The last House of the Dragon episode ended on a cliffhanger, with Aegon burned by Vhagar’s flames after Aemond attacked him. Aemond is holding Aegon the Conqueror’s dagger, which he took from Aegon II in the last episode. And he will now be fulfilling all his dreams as the new regent, ruling in King Aegon II’s stead.

Aemond is elected as the leader of the Green faction

Battle of Rook’s Rest was a major victory for the Greens, though suffering major losses. King Aegon II was badly burnt and broken during the combat, and a power vacuum was left. After some opposition from his own mother, Alicent, the Green Council decides on Aemond’s name as the prince regent of the Seven Kingdoms.

Did Aemond intentionally burn Aegon?

During the Battle of Rook’s Rest, Aegon ordered Vhagar to spit fire on Meleys and Sunfyre who were engaged in battle. The flame hits Aegon and Sunfyre straight in the face. Ewan Mitchell, who plays Aemond, confirmed he did it on purpose:

“The first time Aemond uses Vhagar in Episode 10 of Season 1, he lets his emotions get the better of him, and it was ultimately an accident when he kills Luke. But he witnessed firsthand what these dragons are capable of. That is in contrast to Aegon, who, in the skies over Rook’s Rest, didn’t completely understand what he was getting himself into. But Aemond does now, and it was purely intentional, what he did this time.”
