Theories
Rhaenyra and Lucerys’ last scene was originally supposed to be even more emotional in House of the Dragon
In the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen is one of several gray figures. There are various redeeming characteristics in Emma D’Arcy‘s depiction of Rhaenyra, one of which being her love for and care for her children. It is one of the reasons why House of the Dragon’s Season 1 finale was so tragic, but recent revelations hint that it might’ve been even more emotional.
Lucerys and Rhaenyra’s last goodbye had an additional scene
Rhaenyra hugging her son Lucerys before sending her to Storm’s End is already an emotional and heart-warming scene, showing the love between them. According to the fansite Hotd Croatia, the scene had more to it. Luke goes back to his mother for one more hug in a deleted scene from the Season 1 finale sequence where Rhaenyra bids Luke farewell before he departs for Storm’s End.
The extended version makes their last hug even more saddening
Their last goodbye would be the last time the mother and son would see each other. Rhaenyra, unlike Alicent, had raised his children with love and care. Not being able to hold Lucerys one last time, or not even finding his remains, especially when he wasn’t willing to go, would prove to be Rhaenyra’s breaking point.
