After getting the news of the airing month of the final season of Game of Thrones we yet have great news again. Director David Nutter who will be directing three episodes of the eighth season recently confirmed that each episode of the season will be feature length long. Read on.

He revealed via Reddit on the Game of Thrones subreddit, that each episode of the final season will be over 60 minutes long. According to him,

“Season 8 episodes will all I think to be longer than 60 minutes. They’ll be dancing around the bigger numbers, I know that for sure.”

This news gives us some good hopes for the coming season as we all know that there are only six episodes this season. And, Nutter is directing three of them namely episodes 1, 2, and 4. And the remaining episodes 3, 5, and 6 will be directed by Miguel Sapochnik and the showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss respectively. Directing the opening episode of this season (The opening scene is something I’m really looking forward to!), Nutter feels that it will be worth his efforts. He revealed,

“I’ve never directed an opening episode of GOT before until season 8 but I think it’s really important to make a splash. You have to reset the table, put everyone back in their place; you have to take them to their next position. But you have to entertain that’s what’s most important.”

David Nutter has previously directed six episodes in the series namely – Mother’s Mercy (Season 5), Mhysa (Season 3), The Dance of Dragons (Season 5), The Rains of Castamere (Season 3),  A Man Without Honour (Season 2), and The Old Gods and the New (Season 2). When asked by a fan, What was the biggest challenge directing the final season of GoT?, Nutter replied:

“The biggest challenge directing the final season of Game of Thrones is just the importance of getting it right. There was not a second chance to get all of these sequences right, and a lot of sequences had many actors in them and some wonderfully intimate scenes as well.”

“So really it was about taking these characters from point A to B to C to D to E in the various episodes that I did, and making sure that it all balances out properly. We had a lot of rehearsal time and that was really the thing that saved me more than anything else. I’m very happy with the chance to get in there and rehearse with the actors, and I think they were too, and I think it turned out quite well.”

When asked about if Season 8 had the potential to beat the Red Wedding, directed by him in the third season, Nutter said,

“I remember I was shooting season 2 in Iceland and Dan took me to a restaurant in Reykjavik and we had a multi-course, multi wine dinner and wanted to talk to me about directing Red Wedding trying to talk me into it. Well, he didn’t have to talk me into it, I was looking forward to doing it very much — and I hadn’t read the books cause I wanted to let the scripts guide me into where I was going.”

“So I had no idea the pressure I was under except the pressure I always put myself under in order to make it great. The more I get into the project, of course, the more pressure I realize there really was. That was one of the ultimate moments of the series as far as some major characters are concerned and I just wanted to make it good and live up to the books.”

“One of the most interesting things to me that surprised me the most was the responses of the audience — the YouTube videos showing people reacting to what they were watching I felt great about cause I felt like I had succeeded in doing so. As far as season 8 compared to the Red Wedding I just have to tell you – hang onto your seat because it’s going to be special.”

Something that was the most shocking to digest, especially fearing for our favourite characters in the series, was David revealing,

“The White Walker army will not be the only issue our characters have to face in season 8, they have to also face each other.”

Finally, talking about the final season, calling it satisfying, and praising the showrunners David and Dan, Nutter said:

“I’m completely satisfied with how season 8 ends. I think that David and Dan did a tremendous job, and they took into consideration what the fans want, as well as what is right as far as storytelling is concerned. I guarantee there’s going to be lots of surprises and shocking moments, but it’s really very compelling stuff.”
