Two more Game of Thrones spinoffs have likely been scraped off by HBO

Game of Thrones prequel House of The Dragon recently finished its Season 1 quite successfully. According to HBO chief Casey Bloys so far it is the only Game of Thrones spinoff that has been greenlit officially. However, he didn’t deny the fact that there were other projects at work, stemming from the GOTverse or the Martinverse, whichever way you prefer to call it.

There have been several big changes at HBO and WB quite recently, following which a number of supposed spinoffs in the works were shelved.

Which of the Game of Thrones spinoffs have likely been canceled?

There were more than half a dozen Game of Thrones offshoot projects under development at HBO at the beginning of 2020. However, two of them, The Sea Snake and 10,000 Ships, the shows about Corlys Velaryon and Princess Nymeria respectively, have reportedly been canceled. According to a leak by Los Siete Reinos, there was some recent evidence that confirmed the theory.

The news stated that several Reddit users had noticed Startling, Inc., the production company run by George R.R. Martin’s frequent collaborator Vince Gerardis, had 10,000 Ships and The Sea Snake listed up until a couple of days ago, when they were suddenly pulled from the site. The company has always had a presence in all of the recent screen projects that Martin has worked in, from Game of Thrones to House of the Dragon to Dark Winds on AMC.

What were The Sea Snake and 10,000 ships about?

The Sea Snake was a prequel series based on the adventures of Corlys Velaryon a.k.a. the Sea Snake, known as the greatest seafarer in the history of A Song of Ice and Fire’s Seven Kingdoms. It is reportedly the furthest along in development, after House of The Dragon. Corlys Velaryon will be played by Steve Toussaint in House of The Dragon, which makes one wonder if he will reprise the role in the prequel or if there will be a connection between the two prequels.

Set about 1,000 years before the events of Game of Thrones, 10,000 ships would have narrated the story of Princess Nymeria, an ancestor of House Martell who founded Dorne. Amanda Segel, co-exec producer on Hulu’s Helstrom, has been tapped to helm and write the spinoff show. According to Martin, the working title of this spinoff is named after the military move in which Nymeria ordered all her ships to be burned after her army traveled from Essos to Dorne so turning back was not an option.

When will House of The Dragon return?

The filming of House of The Dragon season 2 is currently in pre-production, with the casting currently in progress. HBO chief Casey Bloys has confirmed in an indirect way that House of The Dragon won’t be coming back before the summer of 2024.
