Game of Thrones stars Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington talk about their first on-screen meeting

The much awaited first meeting of Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow took place on this week’s episode 3 of Game of Thrones season 7, ‘The Queen’s Justice’. The hype surrounding the meeting of these two fan-favourite characters sent the fans into frenzy, and the episode did not disappoint in displaying this phenomenal development on screen. The scene was tense and filled with complications. Dany was adamant about Jon bending the knee, while Jon was more concerned about the threat of the White Walkers. There was some obvious tension between the characters even later when Tyrion had acted logically and brought them to an agreement. Actors Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington, who play Dany and Jon respectively, recently discussed the meeting of their characters in an interview with EW.

Both stars agreed that it was a pretty exciting and fun scene to film as their characters did not instantly like each other and had some conflict to cater to.

“I predicted, like everyone, they would meet this season, but I don’t think I predicted it quite as quickly,” Harington said. “But then again, you’ve got to take yourself out of the mindset of the viewer. As far as Jon knows, he’s just meeting this queen he’s heard of and trying to negotiate with her — he’s not meeting Daenerys, who the audience has been watching for so many years. That helps with the surprise of it. He walks into the room and doesn’t expect to see such a beautiful young woman of similar age to him. Any young man’s reaction is going to be, ‘Okay…’ but he puts that aside, because he has to.”

“I had an idea it was coming this season, sure. It was fun to play — she doesn’t like him and she doesn’t believe him,” Emilia said.

It seems the makers and actors of the show were just as excited about Jon and Dany’s first encounter as the fans all over the world. And the hype wasn’t for nothing, since the episode delivered exactly what a lot of us thought was going to happen. It would be interesting to see how Jon and Dany’s relationship unfolds on the show further.
