Game of Thrones fan theory says that Ser Davos Seaworth is the Prince that was Promised
Game of Thrones is a crazy story, and as such, it’s no surprise to anybody in the fandom, when a far-fetched theory shows up. As far as theories go, the biggest one in the fandom is the Azor Ahai theory, also known as The Prince that was Promised. We have discussed various aspects of this theory before, and now we have a new one. A new Game of Thrones fan theory now suggests that Ser Davos Seaworth is Azor Ahai. Read on!
The Azor Ahai theory is about a prophecy which talks about The Prince That Was Promised, a warrior (who was most probably called Azor Ahai). He is said to have saved the world a long time ago, and the prophecy said that he will be resurrected to save the world again. The most famous choice for Azor Ahai’s new avatar is Jon Snow, but a new theory explains how it is Ser Davos Seaworth, instead.
As Melisandre tells Jon, the prophecy goes as follows :
“When the red star bleeds and the darkness gathers, Azor Ahai shall be born again amidst smoke and salt to wake dragons out of stone.”
Now, the fact is that when we are looking for Azor Ahai, we tend to look at the people who are leading the fights, and being the heroes, but if we take a look at Ser Davos, we can see that he is doing a fair bit of work, and always has been, to save the realms, right down to the Season 7 trailer, where he is heard saying :
“If we don’t put aside our enmities and bound together, we will die, and then it won’t matter whose skeleton sits on the Iron Throne.”
Apparently, George R. R. Martin had told Liam Cunningham, who plays Ser Davos, a secret the first time they met, which can very well mean that he has an important part to play in the end-game. The redditor who put forward this theory pointed out a few things.
First of all, the Azor Ahai prophecy says that he has a sword called the Lightbringer. in Season 2, Episode 1, Melisandre says :
“In the ancient books it is written that a Warrior will draw a burning sword from the fire, and that sword shall be Lightbringer. Stannis Baratheon, Lord of Light, your sword awaits you.”
Melisandre says this while a burning ritual of the false gods. Stannis Baratheon then pulls the fiery sword from the fire, and puts it into the sand. Remember that Melisandre believed Stannis was the prince, back then. After a short while, Davos is shown to casually pick up the sword.
The next part reads, as said by Melisandre in A Dance with Dragons :
“When the red star bleeds and the darkness gathers, Azor Ahai shall be born again amidst smoke and salt…”
Now, as you remember, at the Battle of the Blackwater, the Wildfire attack on Stannis’ fleet nearly renders Ser Davos dead, and believed to be dead. Now, this can be seen as his rebirth. with the sale from the sea, and the smoke from the Wildfire, with the red star refers to the red comet seen in the sky around the same time.
Now, the most important bit. Azor Ahai has been said to wake dragons out of Stone, and this is fulfilled by Davos’ role in Jon Snow’s resurrection. The redditor explains :
“During the resurrection scene, Jon Snow is laid out on a stone slab. Melisandre performs the ritual and…nothing happens. Tormund leaves, Melisandre leaves, Edd leaves. Only Davos stays. He lingers… He approaches Jon, internally begging, pleading, willing, praying for his return. Shortly after, Jon gasps his first breath.
The delay between the ritual and first breath was not a dramatic pause. Melisandre did not resurrect Jon Snow. She never believed she could, nor did she have any faith left in the cause. Davos did. Davos brought Jon Snow back to life. Davos woke the dragon from stone.”
That pretty much seals the deal. If Ser Davos is revealed to be Azor Ahai / The Prince that was Promised, don’t be surprised! What do you think about this theory? Tell us in the comments, down below!
