Game of Thrones Author George R. R. Martin Regrets Not Staying Ahead of the Show
Game of Thrones has often been described as the biggest blockbuster show of the past decade. The show was based on the highly popular novel series of George R. R. Martin – A Song of Ice and Fire. However, the series suffered during its end stage, mainly because of the absence of source material from the author. Many blame Martin for the controversial eighth season, for his output has been rather slow since the past few years. In fact, fans have been waiting for his next book ‘Winds of Winter’ for nearly a decade now. And it seems the veteran writer regrets the fact that he’s so behind.
In an interview with the WTTW, Martin said, “Looking back, I wish I’d stayed ahead of the books,” he said.
“When they began [Game of Thrones], I had four books already in print, and the fifth one came out just as the series was starting in 2011. I had a five-book head start, and these are gigantic books … I never thought they would catch up with me, but they did. They caught up with me and passed me! That made it a little strange, because now the show was ahead of me and the show was going in somewhat different directions. I’m still working on the book, but you’ll see my ending when that comes out.”
Martin also said that he thinks that the first, House of the Dragon, will “probably be on next spring” — and the next, long-awaited book in this series, The Winds of Winter.

Game of Thrones rose to fame in the last decade due to its amazing storyline, engaging characters and realistic battle scenes. There is hardly anyone on earth who hasn’t heard about the show. No wonder fans love it so dearly, that’s why the final season was really hard for some of them. The controversial ending created a rift between the fans and the showrunners. The main reason, that many fans have theorised is the fact George R. R. Martin hasn’t finished writing the books yet. Though people are impatiently waiting for the next instalment, Martin seems to have taken a little break from writing for now. Nonetheless, he says he still loves the world of Westeros and wants to write more.
In an interview with the local station WTTW, Martin said, “It was the popular television show in the world for a time. It won more Emmys than any other show in television history,” he said. “I’m very pleased to be associated with it. It also made me famous, which I have mixed about feelings about. I think it was Bill Murray who said if you dream of fame and fortune, try just fortune first. There is something to say for that. Fame is definitely a double-edged sword.”
“I’ve been writing stories about Westeros and the people who live there, the Seven Kingdoms, since 1991,” he said. “It’s such a huge part of my life at this point…It’s transformed my life, for good or for ill. It is where I am. And I do love Westeros, I love telling stories about it, so there’s a lot more stories to tell.”

Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is one of the biggest money-making mints of the entertainment industry in present times. Being a part of such an illustrious universe is an achievement itself. Actress Elizabeth Olsen, who dons the moniker of the Scarlett Witch in the superhero universe, is one of the most famous stars in the franchise. However, there are roles that even the biggest artists yearn to play, and sadly they don’t always get it. Olsen recently revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that she once auditioned for the role of Daenerys on Game of Thrones. However, she didn’t get the part.
She explained, “I auditioned for, like, the assistant to the casting director in a small room in New York with just a camera on me and them reading the script. I was doing the Khaleesi speech when she comes out of the fire. It was awful. I didn’t get a callback.”
This wasn’t the first time Olsen commented on her botched Game of Thrones audition, either. Back in 2019, when appearing on Live with Kelly and Ryan, the WandaVision star said the experience was so bad that she wished she had stopped the audition halfway.
“I should have [stopped it]. I think I would now. I’d be, ‘I don’t think I’m going to do this any justice… hopefully, call me back at a different time for something else.”
Several other celebrities have tried out for Game of Thrones roles as well, who didn’t succeed. Would you have liked to see Elizabeth Olsen as Daenerys Targaryen? Talk to us in the comments below!
Game of Thrones ended nearly two years ago and fans miss the show dearly. Some of the actors of the show were so lovable among the general audience, they became a household name. However, we can always enjoy their amazing performances in their newer projects. Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen on the show, will be joining the ever-sprawling Marvel Cinematic Universe. Clarke has been finalised to join Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion.
During her extensive chat with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Emilia Clarke revealed that everyone has to tape their audition for Marvel projects. She was glad she had to do it for her mysterious MCU part in the upcoming Disney+ series.
She said, “I’m never going to be the actor that goes ‘I don’t tape”. Yes. The first people I spoke to with Marvel after getting the role was their security team…I actually live in fear that something is going to happen, and I’m going to say something, and they’ll get upset. But, I play a character that I’m super into everything about it.”
Clarke adds that she hasn’t auditioned for Marvel before. She isn’t sure why it didn’t happen during the Game of Thrones years, “I don’t know that happened, I could have been up for it and nobody ever told me…No, this is my first brush [auditioning] with Marvel. I feel like there was the whole time I was with ‘Game of Thrones’; one would imagine that, this is me guessing…[Marvel Studios] didn’t want to take someone that’s in the middle of a massive franchise out of respect, or they just thought I was crap until now [laughs].”
Clarke also said she understood why fans were mad at Game of Thrones season 8 finale. Who do you think Clarke will play in Secret Invasion? Tell us in the comments below!
