13 details you might have missed in Game of Thrones season 7 episode 2: Stormborn

It’s been a day since Game of Thrones season 7 episode 2, Stormborn premiered and we are back with our usual analysis of the episode in which we share with you some of the details from the episode that you might have missed. Last week we talked about the 13 details that you might have missed during the season 7 premiere. Do check it in case you missed the article. The latest episode also had many references to events that have happened in the past and we have collected as many details as we could spot.

1. Daenerys speaks like her father

The episode starts with Daenerys questioning Lord Varys’ loyalty and Varys makes it clear that he’s not there to serve Kings and Queens but the common people and he lets her know that he feels Daenerys is the best person to rule the Seven Kingdoms and that’s the reason why he chooses her and Daenerys makes him swear that he will always give her his honest opinions and then she tells him that if he betrays her, she will burn him alive.

This is exactly what the Mad King Aerys loved to do during the later stages of his life. The Mad King used to see conspiracies everywhere and he used to think that there were many traitors around him, who would betray him and the punishment for his enemies would be burning them alive. He thought that even his son Rhaegar Targaryen was conspiring against him. This scene made us think that Daenerys does behave like her father at times. Another important thing to be noted over here is that her father burned alive Jon Snow’s grandfather, Rickard Stark using wildfire and Rickard’s name has been taken more than once in this episode.

2. The parallel between Jon Snow and Daenerys

During the episode, Melisandre tells Daenerys about Jon Snow and the things that he has done till now and why she thinks that the Lord of Light has chosen him.

“As Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, he allowed the Wildlings south of the wall to protect them from great danger,” Melisandre said. “As King in the North, he has united those Wildlings with the Northern houses so together they may face their common enemy.”

Daenerys replies, “He sounds like quite a man.”

Back in season 5, Samwell read a letter to Maester Aemon, which had a report about Daenerys.

“And though Daenerys Targaryen maintains her grip on Slaver’s Bay, forces rise against her from within and without,” the letter said. “She refuses to leave until the freedom of the former slaves is secure.”

Samwell further added, “She sounds like quite a woman.”

3. Jamie getting Dickon’s name wrong is a way of re-introducing the character

We met Samwells’s younger brother Dickon Tarly for the first time in season 6 but the character was played by a different actor in the 6th season. In the latest season, Tom Hopper took over the role from Freddie Stroma.

So, when Jaime comes to meet Randyll Tarly, he get’s Dickon’s name wrong and then Tom Hooper introduces his character once again. However, it’s interesting that Jaime calls him Rickard when he meets him. This is the first direct reference to the name in the episode but it isn’t the last one.

4. Parallel between Cersei and Joffrey

In the episode, Qyburn takes Cersei to the place beneath the Red Keep where all the Dragon skulls are and he presents her a new weapon for fighting against the Dragons. The weapon looks like an enlarged crossbow and Qyburn asks Cersei to fire it and we see the big arrow piercing through the skull of Balerion. This is similar to the scene involving Joffrey when he shows Margaery Tyrell his new weapon.

5. Archmaester Ebrose picks up a book about the Lannisters

This detail doesn’t seem to be important at the moment but Archmaester Ebrose picks up some books from the library for his reference and this book about the history of the Lannisters gets a decent amount of screentime, which makes us wonder if it’s going to play a role later this season.

6. Reference to the theory about Samwell Tarly being the narrator of Game of Thrones

Last season when Samwell reached the Citadel, he got to see the magnificient library and that was the time when we realized that the huge Astrolabe that we see duing the opening credits is actually present in the Citadel. This made many people wonder whether the entire story that we are watching is being narrated by Samwell.

In the episode, when Samwell and Archmaester Ebrose are in the library, Ebrose tells Sam that he’s writing a book titled “A Chronicles of Wars Following the Death of King Robert I” and when he asks Samwell what would he call the book, Samwell says, “possibly something a bit more poetic.” The name of the book series on which the show is based is “A Song of Ice and Fire” which does sound poetic.

7. Ser Jorah is writing his final letter before taking his own life

Earlier in the episode, Ser Jorah is told by Archmaester Ebrose that there’s is no way they will be able to cure him and if he was a commoner, he would’ve been sent away to Valyria immediately, but he’s a knight and that’s why he is getting an extra day to stay and he then glances towards Jorah’s sword telling him to think about how he would like to spend the day, which indicates that it’s better if he kills himself, rather than suffering.

We then see Jorah writing a letter to Daenerys and this is going to be his final letter before he kills himself. He even looks at his sword while writing the letter. Lukily for him, Samwell arrives just in time and starts operating on him and I don’t want to talk about the rest of it as it was a disgusting scene.

8. Arya talks about murdering the Freys

Arya meets Hot Pie at the Inn at the Crossroads and he brings some food for her. Arya eats some of the pie and tells Hot Pie that it’s delicious and he let’s her know the process he follows while baking the pie. That’s when Arya tells him, that she didn’t follow the process and Hot Pie asks her, “You been making pies?” Arya replies, one or two, which is a reference to Walder Frey’s 2 sons, whom she killed and used their body parts while baking the pie and then fed it to Walder Frey before she killed him.

9. You can’t trust a Targaryen

Jon Snow tells all the Lords and Ladies at the Gret Hall that he has received an invitation from Tyrion Lannister, to meet Daenerys Targaryen and he is going to accept the invitation. Everyone disagrees with his decision and Yohn Royce tells him, “A Targaryen can’t be trusted.” This is ironic as Jon Snow himself is a half Targaryen. I would like to see the reactions on everyone’s faces when they come to know the truth.

10. Sansa talks about Rickard Stark

When Jon announces his plans, Sansa reminds him about what happened to their grandfather, Rickard Stark when he was invited to King’s Landing by the Mad King. This is another reference to Rickard Stark in this episode and it makes me wonder if the showrunners are constantly using his name as we might get to see visions about him and Robert’s Rebellion later in this season.

11. Parallel between Jon Snow and Ned Stark

Before Jon leaves for Dragonstone, he visits Ned Stark’s tomb and Littlefinger follows him there and tells him how he loves Sansa like he loved Catelyn. That’s when Jon loses his mind and slams Littlefinger against the wall.

We have seen Ned Stark doing the same with Littlefinger way back in the first season when Ned found out that Littlefinger had kept Catelyn in his brothel.

12. Arya’s short reunion with Nymeria

In the episode, Arya finds out that the Starks have recaptured Winterfell and she immediately changes her plans and starts heading North and that’s when she meets Nymeria. It’s been years since they have last met and now Nymeria has grown a lot and she has her own wolf pack and when Arya asks her to come with her to Winterfell, Nymeria just leaves with her pack. That’s when Arya says, “That’s not you.”

This is a reference to the first season where Ned Stark is talking with Arya and he tells her that once she grows up, she will become a lady and marry a lord and have babies and Arya tells him, “That’s not me.”

Nymeria mirrors the Arya from the first season who was wild and didn’t want to be tamed and Arya realizes that and says good bye.

13. Euron’s ship, Silence

We got to see Euron and his crew in action in the episode and one thing that we saw was that once Yara and her crew were defeated, Euron’s men were cutting the tongues of her crew members. Even during the scene where Euron’s crew captured Ellaria and Tyene Sand, they didn’t speak a word. That’s coz Euron makes sure all his crew members are mute as he prefers silence. It also ensures that no one talks back to him and it also eliminates chances of a mutiny.
