Carice van Houten explains how expectations changed towards the end of Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones was the biggest fantasy epic the world has ever seen. The show amassed record viewership and awards and is dubbed the greatest TV show of the 21st century. The series became a sensation as it moved through its eight seasons. With every season, the expectations skyrocketed. This was one of the reasons why the fanbase was divided at the end of the final season. Actress Carice van Houten, who played Melisandre on the show, talked to Collider about the same.
Van Houten explained, “It was so epic that, for a long time, I wasn’t really aware of it being that epic. I just was doing my job and having fun with my colleagues, being in this weird fantasy series that was really well-written and really new and cool. Only towards the end did I feel like it was really taking over the world and that the expectations were becoming so crazy and high.”
She continued, “It became bigger, bigger, bigger, and bigger, and I felt a bit smaller and smaller and smaller, even though people knew me more. It has definitely done good for my career, but creatively, after a certain amount of years, I just felt like I needed to go in a different direction. I loved playing her and I loved being on that show. It definitely has opened a lot of doors for me, that would probably not have been opened before or after if I hadn’t done it.”

Sometimes we need fantasy to survive reality. Talking about survival, nothing projects it better than the Mockingjay series. Game of Thrones’ Gwendoline Christie played a major role in The Hunger Games’ last two instalments. However, the Brienne of Tarth actress was a last-minute replacement for another actress. American Horror Story’s Lily Rabe was initially tapped to play Commander Lyme in Mockingjay Parts 1 & 2. Five years later, she finally revealed to Collider why she was replaced.
She said, “I think there was some stuff out there at the time that was not accurate. It was actually so simple, what happened. I was doing Much Ado About Nothing in the park with Hamish [Linklater] and I think we’d been planning it for however long and talking about it for probably a few years. Then it was happening, it was set and when I was cast in the Hunger Games, the dates worked with Much Ado. I think I was going to shoot it before we started rehearsal. And for reasons, I no longer remember that had absolutely nothing to do with me, but just to do with production, the dates pushed on Hunger Games and they pushed a few times.”
Rabe would have loved to play both the roles, but she was just following through on a commitment she’d already put a lot of time into. Rabe would have been a great Commander Lyme if given the chance. However, Gwendoline Christie certainly fit the role well.
Gwendoline Christie is soon to appear in Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman as a female version of Lucifer. What do you think about the interview? Tell us in the comments below!
The notions of beauty are subject to time, regional and cultural influences. Everyone has different criteria for deeming something or someone beautiful. Even celebrities had to face the pointy end of the stick on the basis of their looks. The gorgeous Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke, was one of them, quite unbelievably. She revealed to Elle UK about the incident that happened at the height of her career.
The star said, “I once had a facialist who told me I needed fillers and I showed her the door. I was literally just like, “get out”. Her exact words were, “Then, you can have your face back.” At that point, I was 28.”
She went on, “Oh my god, yes. You hear about all your contemporaries getting it done and you’re like, “Does that mean I have to? Should I be doing that?” And then you work on a movie and the director of photography lights you beautifully and you get over it.”
“I work in an industry where I’ve got to move my face, and I’ve got to be expressive, and you can’t light filler. You just can’t light it. It doesn’t look right, you look shiny and strange. If my job is telling me that I need to have anything more than possibly a bit of Botox when I’m 45 or whatever, then I’ll stop doing the job.”
She said, “My mother has never had any work done and I think she’s incredibly beautiful. I look to women and actors who are older than me who are f*cking beautiful and I think what your skin does as you age is elegant.”

Netflix’s Iron Fist series was Marvel’s adventurous endeavour in the world of superhero TV shows. Game of Thrones actor Finn Jones was in the lead role as Danny Rand (Iron Fist) on the show. Marvel released Iron Fist 2nd Season in September 2018 with an improved story play. Unfortunately, due to low ratings and viewership, Marvel cancelled the release of its 3rd Season in 2018.
It has been two years since then and it seems that luck is in the favour of Marvel fans. A rumour has arisen regarding the revival of the 3rd Season. It is going to be good news for the fans who are eagerly waiting to see their favourite hero in action.
In a recent interview, Jones opened up about the rumoured third season. Speaking with Collider, Jones said:
“It really was gonna be about Danny finally assuming the role of the Iron Fist, fully accomplished, fully charged up, and fully in control of his s**t, as well. It was gonna be this amazing story [with] Danny and Ward off in foreign lands as a buddy storyline almost. And then, you had Colleen in New York, isolated with this new power, struggling to come to terms with her identity and with this power. At some point, we would have met again and probably formed this crazy power couple [or] superhero relationship.”
Although, it’s unclear what Marvel is going to do with the show. Also, Finn advised Hailee Steinfeld about her new role in the MCU. What are your views about this show? Tell us in the comment below!
