Emilia Clarke seems to have really gone all out to prepare for Daenerys Targaryen’s final scenes in the series finale.
In her final speech given to her assembled army on the steps of the Red Keep, Emilia Clarke had to speak in both Dothraki and Valyrian, both fictional languages she had to learn over the course of eight seasons. And who better to take inspiration for a crazed dictator’s victory speech than Adolf Hitler himself.
“In giving all these speeches in fake languages, I watched a lot of videos of—now it seems funny—dictators and powerful leaders speaking a different language to see if I could understand what they were saying without knowing the language,” Clarke said, speaking to Variety. “And you can! You absolutely can understand what Hitler’s f*cking saying, these single-focus orators speaking a foreign language. So I thought, ‘If I can believe every single word I’m saying, the audience won’t need to be looking at the subtitles too much.”
Clarke said she stayed up late for almost two months preparing for her speech, rehearsing it on everything from her co-workers to her fridge and window.
All that rehearsing really did pay off, because Emilia Clarke’s performance was brilliant, to say the least.
What did you think of her final speech and her character’s fate?
