What comes after Game of Thrones? A full two-hour behind-the-scenes documentary chronicling the making of the show’s most ambitious season to date. The feature-length documentary will air on Sunday 26th May at 9 PM, exactly one week after the Season 8 finale. HBO calls it Game of Thrones: The Last Watch.
The documentary has been directed by acclaimed British documentary filmmaker Jeanie Finlay, whose previous credits include Seahorse, Indietrack, and The Great Hip-Hp Hoax. Finlay was given unrestricted access to the Game Of Thrones sets for a full year to capture in detail the blood, sweat, and mud that went into bringing the final season of Game of Thrones to life.
HBO describes the upcoming documentary in the following words:
“Made with unprecedented access, The Last Watch is an up-close and personal report from the trenches of production, following the crew and the cast as they contend with extreme weather, punishing deadlines and an ever-excited fandom hungry for spoilers.
“Much more than a “making of” documentary, this is a funny, heartbreaking story, told with wit and intimacy, about the bittersweet pleasures of what it means to create a world — and then have to say goodbye to it.”
The run-up to Season 8 has been bittersweet for fans across the world. Sure, we are all itching to know the destiny of our favourite characters, and scrambling to analyze every bit of information coming our way (Read our analysis of the latest group of Season 8 still photos here). But it also means there will be no more seasons of this decade-spanning saga to wait for.
A full-length Game of Thrones documentary will at least give us something to look forward to even after 23 May. Thank God for small mercies!
