One Episode Wonders: Five Game of Thrones characters who only survived one episode.

One Episode Wonders: Five Game of Thrones characters who only survived one episode.

There is only one thing we say to Death. Not today’ – Unfortunately for many characters in Game of Thrones, including the much loved Syrio Forel who issued this now classic line, Death wasn’t listening. Yet Syrio was around for a good few episodes, at least. We grew to love the charismatic former first sword of Braavos. We mourned his death obsessively, inventing elaborate escape stories and fan theories, such as Syrio Forel and Jaqen H’ghar actually being the same person (this could be credible, but it’s too late in the Game to bring him back now. You know what they say about grief.)

Death is so common in Game of Thrones that a bloodless episode is rare. We’re used to seeing characters butchered after a few appearances. However, there are scores of characters that are introduced and then disposed of in the same episode. These characters are what I like to call, ‘One Episode Wonders’. So lets have a look at a few that made more of an impact than their screen time would suggest.

#1: Will – Ranger of the Night’s Watch (S1, E1).

One Episode Wonders: Five Game of Thrones characters who only survived one episode.

Remember, Will? Think back all the way to the very first episode of Game of Thrones: three rangers of the Night’s Watch (Will included) head north of the wall to scout Wildling villages. At the beginning of the episode, Will discovers the mutilated remains of dozens of Wildlings. Will runs back to let the other rangers know, yet when they return the bodies are gone. At this moment, a White Walker strides into the clearing. He slaughters Will’s brothers, but spares Will. The next time we see Will, he has been captured by Stark banner men as a deserter. Ned Stark passes the sentence and swings the sword. Whilst Will’s death may seem inconsequential, his character introduces us to the threat of the White Walkers. Will is the first man in Westeros to warn of their return. For that reason, he is and always Will be (pun intended) a ‘One Episode Wonder.’

#2: Jon Arryn – Hand of the King and Lord of the Vale (S1, E1).

One Episode Wonders: Five Game of Thrones characters who only survived one episode.

Okay, so we never actually see Jon Arryn alive. In this sense, some might say he’s a debatable ‘One Episode Wonder’. However, he technically did not survive one episode and that is pretty much all you have to do to fulfill the ‘OEW‘ criteria. Jon Arryn’s death in the first episode of Game of Thrones is the event that sets war in motion. Ned replaces Jon as hand of the King and, like his predecessor, learns the truth about the legitimacy of Cersei’s children. Ned’s sense of honor, however, ultimately dooms him, as he underestimates Cersei and, fatally, her willingness to do anything to protect her children. Jon Arryn, though never alive on screen, is a ‘One Episode Wonder’ whose death causes chaos in Westeros. As such, he is fitting member of ‘OEW’ club.

#3: Mag the Mighty – King of the Giants (S4, E9).

One Episode Wonders: Five Game of Thrones characters who only survived one episode.

Mag the Mighty’s stint in Game of Thrones was short, bloody and absolutely thrilling. Who cares that we never heard a discernable word come from his mouth (aside from a scream of anger at seeing his kinfolk impaled by a ballista). I mean, that scene down in the tunnel of Castle Black. That was incredible. I had goose bumps all up my arms and was nearly moved to tears, as Gren and co recited their Night’s Watch vows whilst Mag charged toward them – ‘I am the watcher on the wall, the shield that guards the realms of men…’ It still gets me now! For that scene alone, and the small fact that he fits the criteria, Mag the Mighty is most definitely a ‘One Episode Wonder’.

#4: Karsi – Chieftainess of the Ice-River Clans (S5, E8).

One Episode Wonders: Five Game of Thrones characters who only survived one episode.

I was gutted when Karsi died. She had so much about her and was such a strong character. In fact, I had a sneaking suspicion that she’d fill the Ygritte-shaped void in Jon Snow, but alas, a dead pack children put a stop to that wildling rebound. For me, ‘Hardhome’ is one of the best episodes, if not the best episode of Game of Thrones (a close second to ‘The Battle of the Bastards’, at worst!) Karsi is one of the characters that make the episode such a success. She fulfills both her roles perfectly, mother and leader. Her first priority is to see her children board the ships waiting in the bay. Her second priority is to secure her people’s safety, something she dies for. Saying that, The Night King does resurrect her at the end of the episode, so we may see her again. In any sense, she’s certainly a ‘One Episode Wonder’, for now.

#5: Brother Ray – Faith of the Seven Septon (S6, E7).

One Episode Wonders: Five Game of Thrones characters who only survived one episode.

Brother Ray was introduced in E7 of S6, ‘The Broken Man’. Whilst the episode was a tad too Hollywood for my liking – man with dark past forced to re-enter his old world – Brother Ray was an interesting character who, of course, was responsible for bringing back the much loved Sandor Clegane (a.k.a. The Hound.) Ray also had a dark past of his own, formerly serving as a sell-sword before finding the light of the Seven, and was a well-needed counter weight to the relentless piety of the High Sparrow. However, Ray was short lived. At the end of the episode, Clegane returns from chopping wood to find that Brother Ray and his community have been murdered by rogue members of the Brotherhood without Banners. The Hound picks up an axe and so begins his revenge mission. For the simple reason that he brought back The Hound, Brother Ray is surely a ‘One Episode Wonder’.

George R.R. Martin extends his support to the 'Black Lives Matter' protests

Raging protests took place in the United States along with the rest of the world after George Floyd, an African-American, was pinned to death by four policemen. The incident took place on May 25 in Minneapolis, Minnesota; and ever since then, the Black Lives Matter movement has caught fire across the globe; including all the fifty states of the USA. Although violent riots broke out in some places, most people raised their voices peacefully against racial injustice and police brutality. George R. R. Martin, the man whose words brought Game of Thrones to life, also voiced his opinion on his Not a Blog.

In a post titled “Words for our Times”, Martin posted a picture with two quotes by Frederick Douglass; a famous African-American social reformer who spoke and wrote against slavery. “Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will,” read the first one. The American author wrote no words of his own yet clearly expressed his unease and anger towards the way people have segregated various sections of the society based on class, race, and gender. The ignorance of the society and of those in power regarding such issues has cost the safety of our freedom, life, and diversity. It has only spread hatred and brought ruin to the marginalized groups.

Many from the Game of Thrones cast had come out in the open to support the Black Lives Matter movement. Actors like Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), Kerry Ingram (Shireen Baratheon), and Richard Madden (Robb Stark) took to streets and walked and chanted with the protesters. Other celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Brad Pitt, and Michael B. Jordan also spoke for equality and the stake of black voices in different aspects of the society. Slogans like “No justice No peace”, “White silence is violence”, “I can’t breathe” echoed through the streets.

The US President, Donald Trump’s recent statement calling “Black Lives Matter” a symbol of hate has raised questions about the role of the people in power. However, the office of the President has made it clear that it was meant for the organization of the same name that they claim is leading people to violence and extremism. Whatever the reasons, it’s not possible to rule out any government from the equations of injustice. It’s a burden shared by every citizen which is mirrored in the face of our leaders.

Looney Tunes Cartoons more popular than Game of Thrones on HBO Max

Looney Tunes Cartoons is more popular than Game of Thrones on HBO Max

We have to let things go after a point even when we want to hold on to them forever. The HBO network’s most popular show of the last decade, Game of Thrones bid us goodbye before the advent of the 2020s. Although there’s no need to drop GoT from our memories, the audiences have begun to look forward. With the launch of WarnerMedia’s streaming service platform HBO Max on May 27, new horizons have come upon. The most popular show on HBO Max within the first four days of its launch was not Game of Thrones or other adult hits such as The Sopranos or Sex and the City. It was Looney Tunes Cartoons, which was followed by The Not-Too-Late Show with Elmo on the second spot; both aimed at kids. Read on to find out more.

Looney Tunes Cartoons is more popular than Game of Thrones on HBO Max

Looney Tunes Cartoons is an animated web TV series; created as a reboot from the characters of the classics, Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies (from the 1930s-1960s). It premiered on May 27, 2020, along with the debut of HBO Max. Parrot Analytics, a global data firm, estimates the most popular shows in terms of social media, fan ratings, and piracy. The stats for the shows on HBO Max told us that Looney Tunes drew a demand that was 19.4 times higher than an average show.

This was more than the demand for the top shows of Quibi and Apple TV+; within the first four days of their respective launches. But the interest pales in comparison to Disney+’s The Mandalorian, which had generated an interest of 46.1 times higher than an average show; when it debuted in November 2019. At the end of the first week of HBO Max, Love Life (a rom-com anthology series) took the second spot after Looney Tunes Cartoons; with a demand of 9 times more than an average show.

The report by Bloomberg hints that the latest trends on HBO Max suggest a necessary diversification in terms of the audience demographic. HBO has produced some great, premium content for its adult viewers over the years; while there hasn’t been much variety available for the kids. However, with new streaming services such as Disney+, Apple TV+, and the already established Netflix and Amazon Prime, a wave of family-friendly content has emerged. Thus, HBO Max also seems to be making the cut in the race of growing competition.

The path of HBO Max has been far from smooth as the COVID-19 pandemic has halted the production of any new exclusives. Also, not everyone is aware of the differences between HBO (already has 40 million subscribers) and HBO Max. The quality of HBO shows has never been questioned. Giants like Game of Thrones, Succession, Chernobyl, and Barry have carried HBO with great value and reception. But the new streaming battle will have to be fought with a great mix of new originals and old classics; which would pave a way to get HBO Max in front of a large number of viewers.

So, yes, Game of Thrones might not interest everyone who is watching these news shows on the streaming platforms; perhaps because they have already watched the biggest fantasy-drama ever. However, the interest in Westeros will certainly rise when the upcoming prequel, House of Dragon arrives. And with more spinoffs in the pipeline, plus two monumental books in the ASOIAF series still in progress, Game of Thrones is here to stay; with one face or the other.

Our world needs a lot of goodness and kindness right now. Speaking of, Game of Thrones actors have been especially very kind since the pandemic outbreak. While somebody like Isaac Hempstead Wright has helped his stepdad distribute the PPE to the health workers, the likes of Sophie Turner has been vocal about the need for social distancing. They haven’t been behind in giving charities as well. Maisie Williams generously gave £50000 to her animal shelter, Emilia Clarke too, has been doing her bit in spreading happiness as well. Read on to know more about it.

As per Independent, Clarke recently hosted a virtual cooking session with her fans and shared the pictures on her Instagram. The 12 fans were the winners of a lucky draw pulled from those that donated to her COVID-19 relief fund. Clarke in her own words had a roaring time and the pictures are proof of it. Mid-“my batter looks like its thrown up on itself, how about yours?!” Chat… THIS is how I throw a cook-along party, (in Covid time that IS a thing I swear) full of mess and big arm gestures in lieu of actual cooking knowledge. Ted @gommie_poem and I were joined in my messy kitchen by 12 beautiful souls as we all made and ate…pancakes! 🥳 (a soufflé seemed a bridge too far) Quote of the meal “mine look like chicken fillets” (to be fair I found a recipe that didn’t need flour so things got a little… DENSE. 😋) This roaring good time we all had was a thank you for the incredible donations these wonders made towards @sameyouorg Covid Relief fund. We have created an online clinic for brain injury recovery which is growing into something truly magic. LIKE OUR PANCAKES! #newcookingshowanyone? #illbrushuponmywhiskingskills #👩‍🍳 #❤️ #👌

She loved making her food with “12 beautiful souls” and revealed her reason for hosting the cook-along. She wrote further:

Clarke had launched her charity SameYou in 2019 which looks after the adults who have suffered strokes and brain injuries. She especially wanted to help the individuals during the pandemic and wanted to raise £250,000 for the same.

We have absolutely loved how active our favorite stars have been in these trying times. Clarke has been especially associated with multiple charity events which just goes on to show what a golden heart she is.
