Kristian Nairn and Isaac Hempstead-Wright recall the humble beginnings of Game of Thrones

Every popular franchise has a little story behind its road to success. They face many challenges, but with great efforts, they finally take off to reach great heights. Game of Thrones had a pretty rocky start – the original pilot episode itself was scrapped. Kristian Nairn (Hodor) and Isaac Hempstead-Wright (Bran) relive the humble beginnings of the show with Digital Spy.

Nairn recalls, “There was a huge sense of anticipation. No-one really knew how the show would be received, but one thing that was clear was how much effort HBO was putting into it. When you walk onto these sets, the sort of level of detail they have gone to, all the research they had done, you just knew this was going to be something special. “

“People were working so hard. As I said it was my first acting job, but I would see other actors saying, ‘Oh my God, I haven’t seen anything like this, this is going to be something different’.”

Isaac Hempstead-Wright talked about growing up with the show. He said, “It’s been a pretty great place to grow up. I mean, the advice, and the people, and the wealth of experienced, interesting, clever people that I’ve had access to as a teenager growing up.”

The Red Wedding year 2020 took a toll on our everyday life. It diminished our outgoing activities to a bare minimum. The COVID-19 pandemic forced people to stay behind closed doors and avoid any physical interaction. No wonder, the dating scenario under the lockdown period changed dramatically. Tim Landers, the Irish actor who played a brother of the Night’s Watch on Game of Thrones, recalled one such incident with Sunday World.

The 54-year-old actor participated in a reality TV show named First Dates. He reminisced, “It was the Gibson Hotel as usual and I had my mask on when I arrived up and was met by the production staff, who also had masks on. They explained what was going to happen. But they want to maintain I was just arriving on the date, so that was filmed later.”

“When I met Matteo (the maître d’) he was behind a screen when I met him when I came in. Then when the date started I was waiting at the bar at a seat two metres from him. When we were brought over to the table we were amazed to find there was a huge distance between us on a very long table, maybe four or five metres away from each other.”

“They had to do what they had to do under the precautions,” Tim points out. “I feel I was told everything. It wasn’t like I didn’t know, it was fine. And he was lovely, a very funny guy. We had a lot in common.”

Game of Thrones was an astonishing tale that amassed record viewership in the past decade. The fantastical drama was an indispensable part of life for both the show’s crew and the audience. Many of the show’s cast members have admitted that the show influenced their life and career in a big way. (Like Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei)). Irish actor Tim Landers recently opened up about his time on Game of Thrones in an interview with Sunday World.

Landers landed the role of Kegs, one of the brothers at Night’s Watch. “I got the part of Kegs, I was one of the Night’s Watch,” he notes. “I had one line in episode eight, the Mountain and the Viper. It’s a very important line from the book, ‘the rains of Castamere’. The way I was treated was fantastic. They put me in a trailer and said ‘hang on there’ and it turned out the actor sharing it with me was Jason Barry, who is from Dublin and was in Titanic, which blew my mind.”

I remember arriving on set and I said ‘I’m in Lord of the Rings’, which I was a huge fan of, it was the closest I could put it down to.”

He added, “I didn’t get to meet to any of the big names but my buddy who plays my wench, we were in a brothel, my buddy was Lois Winstone, who is Ray Winstone’s daughter. We both get killed in the scene. I was killed off camera by a guy with a hatchet and she was killed by an arrow fired by Rose, the girl who’s married to Kit Harrington (Jon Snow) in real life.”

Game of Thrones was a mystical journey of a lifetime, for both the cast and the audience alike. When you have worked at a place for nearly a decade, the memories become a part of you. The little pranks played by your co-workers, the overtime and making friends, you miss it all. However, Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke would certainly not miss a particular event from her time on the show. She recently talked to InStyle and shared her experience post-Game of Thrones.

Clarke reminisced wearing a wig for her role. She said, “That wig did wonders — bloody hell. It was like walking around with a permanent bounce. I was reminiscing with Kit [Harington, Jon Snow in GOT] the other day about the hours we pulled and how hard the work was. There’s a grieving process that goes on after the show, obviously, but I think we are now both finally at the point where we can say, “What bits do we miss?” It’s kind of like remembering a relationship.”

Emilia remembered the time when she decided to bleach her hair and faced terrible consequences. She recalled, “Fuck, yeah. [laughs] I decided to bleach my hair blond because I wanted it to be Daenerys’s colour for the last season. My hair was so fried that I basically had to cut it all off, like a proper Leonardo DiCaprio, Romeo + Juliet boy cut. Now my hair has naturally grown out. I give it more nourishment than you could possibly imagine. It’s my proudest achievement, and I don’t plan on cutting it ever again. I’m going to be 90 with it down to my bum — that’s my plan.”
