Game of Thrones actor B.J. Hogg (Ser Addam Marbrand) dies at 65

The year, 2020 has been no good so far. Since its beginning, we have mostly been hearing reports of infection, death, mismanagement, and hunger. And it’s getting worse with each passing day. People have died in large numbers across nations due to the global pandemic of coronavirus. Amidst the chaos, we have had to bid farewell to some great artists as well. Game of Thrones actor B.J. Hogg passed away on April 30 at the age of 65, reported BBC News. He played Ser Addam Marbrand on the show, one of the chief knights who served Tywin Lannister.

The Northern Irish actor had a career lasting four decades as an actor, writer, and director. His actual name was William Henry Brian Hogg, but he was better known by his stage name, BJ Hogg. Hogg began as a musician and went on to become a notable performer in Belfast’s Lyric Theater. He traveled the world as a celebrated stage performer. Apart from Game of Thrones, he also appeared in the British-Irish crime drama series, The Fall.

He was best known for his role as Big Mervyn in the BBC Northern Ireland comedy series, Give My Head Peace. He starred in the show for more than 20 years and toured for its stage show earlier this year. Another key highlight of his career was the 1996 short film, Dance Lexie Dance. The film also earned an Oscar nomination for the Best Live Action Short Film and rave reviews for its performances. Some other films that Hogg starred in are Hunger, Closing the Ring, and Divorcing Jack.

People close to the actor expressed their grief and offered condolences to his family. Tim McGarry tweeted on behalf of the Hole in the Wall gang, the comedy team behind Give My Head Peace. “Everybody associated with #GiveMyHeadPeace is shocked and heartbroken by the sudden passing of our dear friend and colleague BJ Hogg. We’ve lost a member of the family. Thanks for all the laughs BJ.” In a statement by the team, Tim talked some more about him, “I was on stage with him a few weeks ago and it’s just heartbreaking. He was such a lovely guy. BJ, as you probably know, was a big guy but he was a big softie as well and it is just so, so sad.”

Peter Johnston, the director of BBC Northern Ireland, too had kind words to say about the actor. “BJ was a great comedy talent and a much-loved character in our long-running sitcom, Give My Head Peace. Many people will also remember his performance in the Oscar-nominated Dance Lexie Dance. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad and difficult time”. Hogg’s agent, Geoff Stanton expressed his shock and sadness. “He was such a great man, a big personality, and a terrific actor. His family must be devastated and my heart goes out to them. He was just one of the nicest people I know, or knew – he is going to be such a loss.” The cause of death is not known yet, but it’s ironic that BJ seemingly passed away on his birthday.

Some popular, iconic actors have left us this year. Max von Sydow (Three-Eyed Raven) passed away a couple of months ago. Indian actors Irrfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor died just two days ago. Irrfan, in particular, was a unique performer who left audiences and critics in awe of his silent gestures and quiet reflection. He also left his marks on the global cinematic landscape with films like Inferno and Life of Pi.

We wish the families of all these great artists strength, courage, and peace. Although it’s difficult to measure someone’s popularity, we’re certain these losses to the art community are felt globally.

George R.R. Martin buys the historic Santa Fe Southern Railway with two other partners

George R.R. Martin buys the historic Santa Fe Southern Railway with two other partners

Most of us may not remember when exactly we lost interest in the toys that we wanted to preserve throughout our life. The toys that formed the basis of our existence after school and friends. A distinct item in that stack used to be a train set. Some tracks that you had to assemble, a locomotive and a few cars, and some add-ons to put around the railway tracks. Our beloved American author George R.R. Martin, now 71-year-old, believes it’s “a deep-buried case of Train Lust” from his childhood that prompted him to buy the defunct Santa Fe Southern Railroad along with partners, Catherine Oppenheimer and Bill Banowsky. Read on to find out more.

The Santa Fe Southern Railway is an 18.1-mile spur line between New Mexico’s capital, Santa Fe, and the depot of Lamy, a village-town in New Mexico. It starts from just behind Martin’s movie theatre Jean Cocteau Cinema in Santa Fe. The three partners came together due to shared interest and closeness to the Santa Fe Railyard; which they bought through a joint venture called Santa Fe and Lamy Railroad Partners LLC. Catherine Oppenheimer, an arts philanthropist, has co-founded the New Mexico School for the Arts while Bill Banowsky owns the Violet Crown Cinema. But more than everything, it’s Martin’s child-like enthusiasm about being able to sit in the engine car and blow the whistle that catches our eye. “Even though I’m an old guy, I’m a 13-year-old inside,” he told the Albuquerque Journal.

Regularly scheduled passenger services stopped on the rail-line in 2014. It has since been used for private events and the odd shoot for movies or TV. The trio of Martin, Oppenheimer, and Banowsky has had to push hard to arrive at this fruitful outcome of ownership. The process started in June 2019 with buying a mortgage on the real estate. And it finished with acquiring close to 89% shares of the railroad and the Santa Fe Southern; along with ten train cars and two locomotives. The Lamy depot falls on the route of the Amtrak Southwest Chief train between Chicago and Los Angeles. Amtrak’s lease on Lamy ends soon, and thus, the trio would be able to operate the train track hassle-free.

Although it would require some significant work, time, and money to revive it, Martin and his partners have some elegant plans for the train line. GRRM plans on using the Lamy depot in the expansion of film and TV production; as his non-profit group Stagecoach Foundation is committed to doing in New Mexico. “A Wild West sound stage”, “a backlot”, and the use of the train in film productions are a few of his thoughts. “It was already used in Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid,” he said.

All three of them feel that the railroad and the Lamy depot could become a fun community experience for the locals and the tourists. “There are a lot of opportunities for a new tourist attraction. COVID has thrown a monkey wrench into our plan. We had hoped to get things up and running in 2021, but now it won’t be until 2022,” GRRM said. The author also wrote on his Not a Blog regarding their plans; “We have all sorts of fun ideas for the future: live music and murder mysteries and train robberies (actors playing bandits) and escape rooms and…well, we shall see.”

He calls the murder mystery event “Murder on the Lamy Express”. “We don’t want this to be a shabby railroad on its last legs. We want this to be a real jewel,” he concluded. It seems like George “Railroad” Martin would invent a good amount of fantasy fiction for this exciting new project. And we certainly aren’t complaining. We wish the train-trio the best of luck! Moreover, we hope The Winds of Winter is on the tracks too. Since we want it to be an enthralling ride through the penultimate station of A Song of Ice and Fire saga, we are ready to wait for it!

Game of Thrones stars Peter Dinklage & Jason Momoa join hands for an upcoming film by Legendary, Good Bad & Undead

The impact of the coronavirus pandemic has not let new productions begin for a while now. And it could take some more time before things start to move around. But it hasn’t stopped the filmmakers, producers, and actors from envisioning future projects. We have seen a few deals being cracked in the virtual film market. Now, there’s one more, and it looks like a helluva adventure. Game of Thrones stars Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) and Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo) have teamed up as actors and producers for a supernatural drama called Good Bad & Undead. Read on to find out more.

As per Deadline, Legendary, the American film production company, has brought Peter and Jason on board for the film which will have Max Barbakow donning the director’s hat. The report provided a brief description of the film, “In Good Bad & Undead, Dinklage will play Van Helsing, last in a long line of vampire hunters. He develops an uneasy partnership with a vampire (Momoa) who has taken a vow never to kill again. Together, they run a scam from town to town, where Van Helsing pretends to vanquish the vampire for money. But when a massive bounty is put on the vampire’s head, everything in this dangerous world full of monsters and magic is now after them.” Moreover, the report believes that the premise gives a vibe of the action-comedy Midnight Run in a world of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

The film stems from an original idea by Mark Swift and Damian Shannon; it’s most likely that the duo will write the screenplay as well. They have previously written hit movies like Friday the 13th, and Freddy vs. Jason. The director, Max Barbakow comes fresh off the record-breaking purchase of his film, Palm Springs at the Sundance Film Festival in January, 2020. His other film credits include the dark comedy, The Duke, and the autobiographical documentary, Mommy, I’m a Bastard!

Peter Dinklage and Jason Momoa played such memorable roles on Game of Thrones yet never shared screen space on the show. Their mutual connection was the Mother of Dragons, Daenerys Targaryen; for whom both devoted their loyalties in their own different ways. The two actors have done very well for themselves apart from the show. Peter won multiple awards for his GoT performance as Tyrion Lannister through the entire run of the show; he also starred in successful films like Avengers: Infinity War, X-Men: Days of Future Past, My Dinner with Hervé. He will produce Good Bad & Undead with David Ginsberg via their production company, Estuary Films.

Jason Momoa, however, worked on GoT only for the first season. Yet his portrayal of Khal Drogo won over so many people that he has remained a memorable icon of the biggest show on the planet. The American actor seems to be on a roll lately. We have just heard that The Snyder Cut of Justice League will release on HBO Max in 2021. His stint as Aquaman established DC at the box office like no other title before; (yes, not even The Dark Knight Rises!). He has been involved with some exciting projects and rumored for a few others. With upcoming films like Dune and Aquaman 2, he looks set for big things.

Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa's film Justice League will re-release in the form of The Snyder Cut in 2021 on HBO Max

The final product on our screens, whether it’s a TV show or a film, is a filtered result of many stages of production. Sometimes the content works, sometimes it does not. And it’s only in the aftermath that detailed scrutiny takes place. Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa’s (Khal Drogo) 2017 film, Justice League, was the first cinematic attempt to bring together a DCEU (DC Extended Universe) team (like Marvel’s The Avengers). Despite its superhero-ensemble appeal, the film bombed on both, commercial and critical levels. But for three years, fans had been asking the makers to release the original version directed by Zack Snyder; namely ‘The Snyder Cut’. Now, after a long period of speculation, Zack Snyder himself has made the announcement for the release of the Snyder Cut, called ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ in 2021 on HBO Max.

Jason Momoa put up the poster for the film on Instagram. “Finally it’s happening,” he wrote. He thanked the fans for their constant support, “justice served. all my aloha to everyone who made this happen. all the fans. we love you”. Zack Snyder, the man behind films like 300 and Man of Steel, had directed most of Justice League when suddenly he had to step down due to a personal tragedy. Joss Whedon (The Avengers) took over and completed the film with certain reshoots and editing. The film was slammed by critics and fans alike due to its ‘light-hearted tone’. With Snyder’s announcement, the fans would hope for an original, darker take on the DCEU.

As per CBR.com, Zack has said that he’s putting together a trailer and that it would release soon. The Snyder Cut will be compiled and edited by Zack Snyder from the initial footage he shot. The film’s release on the streaming platform, HBO Max gives its producers, Warner Media (also the parent company of HBO) another chance of mining the untapped profits from its ambitious franchise.

Recently, Jason Momoa had fueled the clamor by outrightly saying, “Release the fucking Snyder Cut” in a video. “We’re just sitting around doing nothing,” Jason started off. “Fucking release the Snyder Cut, am I right? Release the fucking Snyder Cut. You know what I mean? Like, what are we waiting for? There’s some goodies in there. I’m just gonna go ahead and put it out there. Generally, the shit I put out there comes true. Let’s hope it does,” he said. And it did, indeed!

#ReleaseTheSnyderCut had been trending on social media for quite some time, and many actors from the cast had supported it. Apart from Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Ben Affleck (Batman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), and Ray Fisher (Cyborg) had come out in demand of Zack Snyder’s version of the film. However, Henry Cavill (Superman) chose a neutral stand and wanted to focus on the future.

Now, that the revamped version of the movie will release for sure, we hope it brings a crackling light into the darkness that the cinematic landscape of DC has mostly been. Jason’s character from Justice League also has an upcoming solo movie, Aquaman 2, set to release in December 2022.
