George R.R. Martin says Game of Thrones could have ended in films

When you anticipate and wait for something for a long time, it changes, just like you do. It has almost been a decade since the last novel (A Dance with Dragons) in the series A Song of Ice and Fire came out. Things have changed drastically since then: a giant of a show came and went, characters and plot-lines took different turns; and though the final destination might just be similar, people are still waiting for the next book, The Winds of Winter. As always, the man we look towards is George R.R. Martin. The author recently gave an interview to Welt, a German news outlet where he discussed Game of Thrones ending in films, the ending to his books, and his engagements at the moment. We thank Redditors u/mellycafe and u/Whitebread100 who translated the interview for all of us. Read on!

The author pointed at a rather interesting detail about the final fate of Game of Thrones being films.

“We had actually considered this option. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the two creators behind the TV series, actually wanted to end the saga with three big movies after season 7. Game of Thrones was supposed to end in cinema. It was seriously discussed four to five years ago.” George stated.

So, what happened? According to Martin, it wasn’t for him to decide. “HBO controls the film rights for Game of Thrones.” He further said, “HBO didn’t get involved. The executives said: We produce TV shows, we are not in the cinema business. And if HBO does make a movie, like the movie based on Deadwood, they only produce it to show on TV; not on the big screen.” It’s a fair point, we guess. But digital/streaming platforms have changed that. GRRM too says, “Everything is changing at the moment. What is cinema today? Is Netflix producing television or cinema? Everything is mixing up. We no longer know where the boundaries are between cinema, TV, and streaming services.”

Moreover, the biggest question in everyone’s mind right now would be: Will the ending in the books be different from what happened on the show? Well, GRRM answered in a cryptic yet reassuring manner. “People know an ending – but not The ending. The makers of the TV series overtook me which I didn’t expect. Nevertheless, I continue what I’ve been doing for years: I still try to finish the next book ‘The Winds of Winter’ and then the follow-up novel ‘A Dream of Spring’. These are the things I am concentrating on. After that, we will see.”

When Martin says “the ending,” he might be referring to the path that he takes to reach the end; and also, a complete conclusion with his own imagination. He has hinted at the possibility on his Not a Blog.

So, there’s no definite answer as to when those books will come out, but a firm take on a possibly different route. Despite all that, it seems difficult to alter the final points that the show arrived at, or does it?

“How many children did Scarlett O’Hara have? In Margaret Mitchell’s novel ‘Gone with the Wind’, she had three children. But in the cinema version of the novel, she only had one child. Which version is the only valid one? – the one with one child or the one with three? The answer is – neither. Because Scarlett O’Hara never existed. She is a fictional character, not a real person who would have had real children.

Or take The Little Mermaid. We know her from the fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen and the Disney movie. Which one is the real mermaid? Well, mermaids don’t exist. So, you can choose the version you like the best. That goes for any story adapted for cinema or television. Changes are inevitable in this process. Even if the adaptation is as faithful to the literary source material as it was with Game of Thrones,”  Martin said.

It means there’s a good chance that the final story in the books will have its own changes. Before George is able to finish those eagerly-awaited novels, he has been quite busy with a lot of other things.

“I like doing many different things. What I don’t like is writing the same story over and over again. In the beginning of my career, I wrote science fiction, then fantasy, and later horror stories as well. For a while, I also wrote reviews. I taught journalism. Since the mid-80s, I have been writing screenplays; and today, I am also working as a movie producer. Since the completion of Game of Thrones, I am currently developing a prequel series for HBO. Furthermore, I have another deal with the network: I am supposed to produce more shows for them which do not originate from the universe of my stories.” he explained.

One of the projects with HBO includes working with writer Nnedi Okorafor for a film adaptation of her science fiction novel, Who Fears Death. The man even owns an art house cinema of his own in Santa Fe. At the moment, it seems the wizard has his hands full. Where does writing the pending novels fit?

“When it comes to writing novels, I can only take one step at a time. I have writer friends who can work on three or four different projects simultaneously. They start with a novel in the morning, continue with a short story in the afternoon, and write a screenplay at night. I am not able to do that. When I am writing a novel, I dive deeply into the fictional world. It demands my full imagination. I have to live through it, so to say. It is easier to edit a draft, to work as a producer for films, or simply be a cinema owner as compared to writing a novel.” GRRM noted.

It’s true that he is long overdue and we can’t wait to get our hands on the remaining novels. But we can see that the man is human after all. May he finish the song soon! Meanwhile, we will keep feasting on whatever ice and fire comes our way. What are your thoughts? Tell us in the comments section.

Kit Harington says the filming on Marvel's 'The Eternals' is done

As the world adapts to the problems of COVID-19, work is resuming slowly but steadily. Workplaces of high density are still not operating properly, with only a small percent of the workforce back in the offices. While the tech industry can afford the work-from-home routine for its projects, it’s just not possible for the film/entertainment industry to function like that. Real-time filming has come to a halt for some period now, and only pre and post-production work seems like the possibility. So, it has helped at least those projects which had completed shooting before the lockdowns kicked in. In that spirit, we have some good news. Game of Thrones star Kit Harington (Jon Snow) has let us know that Marvel’s The Eternals has finished its filming schedule. Thus, the key film in Phase four of MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) may sick to its original release date in 2021.

Harington plays Dane Whitman, aka the Black Knight, in The Eternals; which would most likely be the 25th superhero film in the MCU. In a discussion on Twitter, he shared the current update on the film. “Well, that’s done, that’s filmed,” Kit said. However, that’s the extent of his knowledge regarding the film’s situation. Since the effects of the pandemic have been varying and unpredictable in many cases, it’s tough to be sure. “It’s just…God knows what happened, or what’s going on with it, I have no idea. I don’t know what’s happening with anything right now,” the English actor admitted.

Kit is not the only Game of Thrones star in the cast of The Eternals; there is also Richard Madden (Robb Stark) who plays Ikaris, one of the Eternals. Moreover, the film has a rich cast in Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani, Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, and many more. The fourth phase of MCU has a variety of films and TV series lined up; which would carry the baton of the Marvel Comics forward after the events of Avengers: Endgame. The Eternals is set to release on February 12, 2021, in the United States. We hope it stays on course.

Isaac Hempstead Wright reveals the extreme security measures that were taken to protect the Game of Thrones finale

Isaac Hempstead Wright reveals the extreme security measures that were taken to protect the Game of Thrones finale

“How far will you go to protect something you love?” It sounds like a dramatic line from a book, film, or show. And it could very well be! But here, we’re talking about the extreme lengths to which HBO went in order to protect the secrets of the final season of Game of Thrones during its filming. There was a long gap of almost two years between the airing of the seventh and the eighth season. So, it was quite obvious that people did as much as they could to fish out the details about the finale of perhaps the most-talked-about TV series ever. Things did leak but HBO took every measure possible to preserve the secrecy. Isaac Hempstead Wright (Bran Stark) revealed the security steps taken during the filming of a very important scene from the final episode of GoT. Read on to find out more. Spoilers ahead.

This scene featured the Stark siblings together for one last time on the show. The scene on the dock where Arya, Sansa, and Bran bid their farewells to Jon before he left for the Wall. Bran had already become the King of the Six Kingdoms; Sansa the Queen of the North; Arya had killed the Night King and was heading West; and Jon would spend the rest of his days beyond the Wall after having killed Daenerys. Thus, too many secrets went into the making of that moment on the dock. So, for that highly-charged scene filmed in Dubrovnik, Croatia, Isaac told news.com.au that the filming location seemed like a “CIA site”.

Isaac Hempstead Wright reveals the extreme security measures that were taken to protect the Game of Thrones finale

“It was ridiculous, the security and secrecy,” he said. We have heard similar things about the security measures from other actors as well. “When we shot in Dubrovnik for that scene where we’re saying goodbye to Jon Snow, I’ve never experienced anything like that; it was like being a secret agent. We came into the country on a chartered flight so nobody would see us, we stayed in this hotel and they booked out the entire hotel just for us. We weren’t allowed to go out, we couldn’t walk outside,” he described.

But that’s not all, the ‘dock-scene day’ amped the security even more. “On that day, HBO rented out every single apartment and every single hotel room that could possibly overlook where we were shooting. We had coast guards patrolling just outside in the water to check no boats were coming by”. Take a breath, it goes on further. “When we were coming in and out of cars we had to be covered in coats; and when we flew back, we were the last people on the flight and we had to sneak in.” It resembles a top-secret mission indeed.

This was all because Game of Thrones enjoyed huge popularity among the masses for almost a decade. “It was really amazing that people loved this story so much and were so desperate to get any nugget of information. You had a pinch-yourself-moment every day,” Hempstead Wright said.

As to whether he foresaw his rise to the throne, the 21-year-old actor said, “I didn’t see it coming at all. A lot of the time it was fans and friends talking and saying ‘I feel like it’s got to be Bran’ and I said ‘You are so wrong, it’ll be someone else.’ Even when I read the script I thought, ‘Is this really true?’ I wasn’t entirely sure, but I was pretty sure it wasn’t Bran. I thought it was going to be an obvious one, maybe Sansa. (But) no complaints there. It couldn’t have gone any better for me. It went badly for other people.”

It’s crazy how time flies on the wings of a raven. Game of Thrones ended more than a year ago. And it feels like just yesterday when we were speculating what course would the final season take. But we won’t go into all of that; we’ve done that so many times and there’s no point drawing fresh blood from an old/nearly healed wound. We’re happy that Brandon Stark sat on the throne; because who better to lead the realm than someone who knows all the mistakes of the history; plus, can watch over his kingdoms in real-time and has got no great desire to rule. All hail Bran the Broken!

Kerry Ingram (Shireen Baratheon) defends the Game of Thrones ending

Kerry Ingram (Shireen Baratheon) defends the Game of Thrones ending

Almost every actor from the cast of Game of Thrones has commented on what they felt about the ending of the show. Most of them have defended the final season and the end it brought forth; while few have chosen a mild stance of criticism. Kerry Ingram, who played perhaps the most loved child character (Shireen Baratheon) on the show, has become yet another cast member to come out in full support of the ending. In a chat with Bang Showbiz, Kerry explained her own take on the HBO series’ infamous culmination.

Kerry Ingram (Shireen Baratheon) defends the Game of Thrones ending

“I think the ending was good, they took into account a lot of the first season. The show started with the Starks and ended with the Starks,” she said. There’s no denying the fact that House Stark remained a pivot around which the story in Westeros revolved through the eight seasons of GoT. The symbolic value of their words (“Winter is coming”), the ancestry of their lineage, and the sheer Northern resolve to survive and stick together forged the base on which the story unfolded. So, yeah, it was inevitable that the story began and finished with the Starks. But does it describe the way everything happened through the course of that journey? Probably not!

Kerry further continued, “Also, I think that the main reason the ending was so controversial is because the show had been running for so long that people had created their own endings. People write their own fan fiction; they write their own endings and it’s beautiful to see but then people get ideas in their head and the ending will never match up to their ideas. But you can’t please everyone and I personally think it was really, really good.”

Now, this is an argument that many actors have made a case for; that you can’t please everyone. While that’s true, it’s also highly subjective. The last season went under so much scrutiny because people were invested too much and yes, they expected a lot. But those expectations mostly arose from George R.R. Martin’s books and David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ show. Game of Thrones turned into a richly complex story over its long run; and it seemed like it became difficult to tame the beast. But since the journey was so well built at least up until the sixth season, it was very natural to expect an equally satisfying end. However, despite all criticism and flak, Game of Thrones still remains one of the best shows for a large majority of people.

Kerry Ingram (Shireen Baratheon) defends the Game of Thrones ending

Kerry’s sweet yet confident portrayal of Shireen Baratheon won her a lot of praise. Shireen’s infectious camaraderie with Ser Davos (Liam Cunningham) and her innocent persona became immortal in the hearts and minds of the fans after her brutal death; which was one of the most shocking moments in Game of Thrones history. Before GoT, Ingram starred in Matilda the Musical from November 2010 to April 2012; for which she received an Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Most recently, she appeared in the Netflix’s British Drama series Free Rein for three seasons.

The 21-year old English actress has been writing her own series during the coronavirus lockdown. “It was originally a film but I realized I couldn’t fit everything I wanted into a film. So, it’s now a series and I’ve had quite a few people interested in it; so hopefully, once this (COVID lockdown) is all over, I’ll have a script to pitch,” she said. Well, we wish her all the luck with this exciting new prospect!

So, what do you guys think about Kerry’s view of the ending? Tell us in the comments.
