Game of Thrones houses and the countries of the world they would represent

Game of Thrones is an epic saga of many proud houses bathed in the personality of its diverse members which share complex relations with other houses. Similar is the world around us. This article is an attempt to find the closest analogies possible and I’ve followed a particular approach, lining them up in order of similarity in their geo-political strategies, historical rulers & religions, real-life alliances & rivalries and more importantly, forming a coherent and converging equivalence as a whole.

Most of the relations are from WW1 and WW2 POV.

Note: All similarities drawn below are just a form of fan fiction and not intended to hurt any of the residents of the countries or the followers of religions mentioned.

HOUSES:

1. Starks – Russia.

Game of Thrones houses and the countries of the world they would represent

  • Huge in size, most of which is cold and wild.
  • A proud house once, but now breaking away into smaller parts at conflict with each other.
  • Mortal enemies of US (Lannisters, see below).
  • The North would then be Soviet Union. Almost impossible to conquer, just ask Germany and Napoleon!
  • That’ll make Armenia – Umbers, Georgia – Dustin, Belarus – Karstarks and Boltons – Ukraine.

2. Lannisters – US of A

Game of Thrones houses and the countries of the world they would represent

  • Follows automatically after allotting Soviet Union to the North.
  • Rich, Powerful and somewhat vile in other (read most :p) Houses’ eyes.
  • Has a knack for liberating other houses of their lands.
  • Lannisters gave the final blow in Robert’s rebellion. Similar to US’s role in WW2.

3. Baratheons – United Kingdom

Game of Thrones houses and the countries of the world they would represent

  • An Old house, ancestry rooting back to the Targaryens.
  • A declining house, much like what UK was reduced to after the 2 world wars.
  • The one which ruled most part of the era following Industrial revolution.
  • Came out victorious from both the world wars (Robert’s rebellion and Greyjoy rebellion), thanks to support from USSR (Starks) and US (Lannisters).
  • Another important analogy is the way various regions of UK are at conflict with each other viz. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Similar to the Baratheon brothers’ conflict

4. Targaryens – China

Game of Thrones houses and the countries of the world they would represent

  • Common, Dragons!
  • On a serious note, an ancient civilization which saw the likes of rulers such as Ghenghis Khan (read Aegon, the Conqueror) who made his enemies tremble, piled up cities with the heads of the conquered.
  • Rulers of a land with different languages, gods and cultures.
  • A forgotten house after the Han and Tang dynasties.
  • Which is making a grand comeback now. Daenerys anyone.? 😉
  • Point to be noted is that Genghis Khan was Mongolian, contrary to above chinese relation. (Common, you can’t get everything on target)

5. Greyjoys – Japan

Game of Thrones houses and the countries of the world they would represent

  • One of the best matches you can find. Group of Islands which turned ambitious in the 2nd world war and got completely obliterated by Lannisters (see Hiroshima, Nagasaki) and Starks.
  • Geographically located close to USSR (Starks) and US (Lannisters).
  • Theon, taken as a ward after Greyjoy Rebellion can be seen similar to the way Allied forces held Japan for 7 years after the 2nd world war.
  • Have had numerous conflicts with Soviet Union.
  • They have different gods than the rest and take immense pride being what they are.

6. Tullys – Cuba

Game of Thrones houses and the countries of the world they would represent

  • The only major reason here is that they have been screwed over by US a.k.a Lannisters for more than 5-6 decades.
  • A house with feeble military power.
  • Shares its communist idealogies with Russia (Starks).
  • A long time colony of Spain, similar to the fact that Tully’s were the liege lords to the throne of Harrenhal before being lords of Riverlands.
  • Heck, even the colors on their flags are same! Red, white and blue!

7. Tyrells – South Korea

Game of Thrones houses and the countries of the world they would represent

  • Self-sufficient house with a strong army.
  • Recently (post 1950) nurtured relations with the Lannisters (US).
  • Anti-US sentiments still remain in the Korean sympathetics

8. Arryns – Germany

Game of Thrones houses and the countries of the world they would represent

  • Though it contradicts the WW1 POV, it holds good in other scenarios.
  • The house with one of the strongest knights (read economy and technology).
  • The conflict between them and US and their alleged closeness to Soviet can be seen as similarities.
  • The Vale’s mountains can be representative of the Alps.
  • One curious relation is that Germany did pull out of their peace accord with Soviet (similar to what Lysa Arryn did with Starks).

9. Martells – India

Game of Thrones houses and the countries of the world they would represent

  • Stayed neutral during the war of the five kings, much like India’s NAM.
  • India has been seen as slightly anti-US until the start of 21st century.
  • Commands one of the strongest army, yet is averse to get into a war.
  • Dorne distinguishes itself because of the power dornish-women enjoy. India, in a similar way, has far greater number of lady Heads of states and governments in its 70 year history than many of the other leading countries of the world. Thanks to Vikram Giriraj for this addition!
  • Martells actually were the only ones who resisted the Targeryens for a long enough time. This can be seen similar to the way India was largely unaffected by the Chinese empires, though they shared their cultures, China wasn’t ever able to conquer India (despite being more powerful).
  • Culturally diverse, with a different approach to food, sexuality and pretty much everything else.

10. Clegane – Israel

Game of Thrones houses and the countries of the world they would represent

  • Strong ally and loyal to the US.
  • A young house which rose to prominence thanks to the US support coupled with their own genius.
  • Militarily awesome, surviving despite being in the most screwed up location on the planet.
  • One blunt contrast is India-Israel relations (which isn’t as bad as Dorne-Clegane).

Moving on to some of the lesser houses, places and religions, which are self-explanatory:

11. Meeren – Syria + Iraq with Harpy’s sons = ISIS.

12. Astapor – Egypt.

13. Qarth – Kuwait.

14. Yunkai – Saudi Arabia.

15. Old Town – Alexandria (The great old Library).

16. Dothraki – Mongols (Brutal fighters with weird customs, expert at horse-riding and brilliant archers).

  • A recently popular theory explaining why Mongols didn’t proceed to conquer Europe says it was majorly because of wet climate and swampy regions which were short on providing pastures for their horses. So there you have it, Dothraki not crossing the Narrow sea (and invading Westeros) because they don’t *trust the water which their horses can’t drink*

17. Valyria – Ancient Rome civilization.

18. Braavos – Venice.

  • Both are merchant cities that have been built on islands and are connected through canals.
  • Share the same history of previously indirect Valyrian (Roman) oppression.
  • Large confluence of cultures.
  • It is geographically similar, being an archipelago built on a lagoon.
  • Nonetheless, the Braavosi bank is parallel to the Medici bank in Florence.

19. Other free cities – Mini kingdoms formed after the fall of Roman (Valyrian) empire.

20. Faceless Men – Hashishiyyin.

21. Freys – Panama.

  • Control an important passage of Panama canal.
  • It’s a popular theory which says that the Panama canal made US the economic giant that it is today. We can see an analogy in the way Freys helped Lannisters get rid of Robb Stark when their defeat looked inevitable.  [8]

22. Boltons – Ukraine (Soviet Union + Starks reference).

23. Old Gods – Paganism / Polytheism.

24. Faith of the Seven – Christian Trinity with Sparrows acting as the Inquisition.

25. The Red God / R’hollor – Islam.

26. Drowned God – Poseidon.

27. God of Death – Atheists.

And Finally,

28. White Walkers – Climate Change (Makes saying “Winter is Coming” all the more dramatic!)

  • All the countries are engaged in sky-rocketing their GDP and HDI and urbanization, ignoring climate change while its one of the truest of things on the planet.
  • The frequency of such a catastrophic change is once in hundreds of thousands of years, similar to the walkers.

which makes

29. Night’s Watch – Scientists, Environmentalists, Climate change activists, etc.

Our world needs a lot of goodness and kindness right now. Speaking of, Game of Thrones actors have been especially very kind since the pandemic outbreak. While somebody like Isaac Hempstead Wright has helped his stepdad distribute the PPE to the health workers, the likes of Sophie Turner has been vocal about the need for social distancing. They haven’t been behind in giving charities as well. Maisie Williams generously gave £50000 to her animal shelter, Emilia Clarke too, has been doing her bit in spreading happiness as well. Read on to know more about it.

As per Independent, Clarke recently hosted a virtual cooking session with her fans and shared the pictures on her Instagram. The 12 fans were the winners of a lucky draw pulled from those that donated to her COVID-19 relief fund. Clarke in her own words had a roaring time and the pictures are proof of it. Check out the post!

Mid-“my batter looks like its thrown up on itself, how about yours?!” Chat… THIS is how I throw a cook-along party, (in Covid time that IS a thing I swear) full of mess and big arm gestures in lieu of actual cooking knowledge. Ted @gommie_poem and I were joined in my messy kitchen by 12 beautiful souls as we all made and ate…pancakes! 🥳 (a soufflé seemed a bridge too far) Quote of the meal “mine look like chicken fillets” (to be fair I found a recipe that didn’t need flour so things got a little… DENSE. 😋) This roaring good time we all had was a thank you for the incredible donations these wonders made towards @sameyouorg Covid Relief fund. We have created an online clinic for brain injury recovery which is growing into something truly magic. LIKE OUR PANCAKES! #newcookingshowanyone? #illbrushuponmywhiskingskills #👩‍🍳 #❤️ #👌

She loved making her food with “12 beautiful souls” and revealed her reason for hosting the cook-along. She wrote further:

Clarke had launched her charity SameYou in 2019 which looks after the adults who have suffered strokes and brain injuries. She especially wanted to help the individuals during the pandemic and wanted to raise £250,000 for the same.

We have absolutely loved how active our favorite stars have been in these trying times. Clarke has been especially associated with multiple charity events which just goes on to show what a golden heart she is.

Pilou Asbæk and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau celebrate Denmark’s freedom from Nazi rule

Game of Thrones actors Pilou Asbæk and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau celebrate the freedom from Nazi rule

Some dates are more significant in our lives than others. For some, it’s their birthday, or their anniversary, while for some, every day matters. However, some dates define who we are. They represent our upbringing, our roots, our culture, and our nation. Recently, two Game of Thrones actors, Pilou Asbæk and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, celebrated a similarly important day rather quietly. Read on to find out more!

May 4th marked the 75th year of the freedom for Denmark from the Nazi rule. It was on this day in 1945 that Danish people finally got their independence from the brutal reign of German forces. Both Asbæk and Waldau took to their Instagram and reflected on it.

While Asbæk looked back on the day by thanking the joint forces of the US, the UK, and the Soviet Union. He also pondered over what the future holds for the people in the next 75 years. Check out his post:

75 years ago today…these guys left #denmark #secondworldwar not on trucks like the photo, that’s from a movie set…but by surrendering themselves to the #allies it’s pretty crazy how the world has changed since then 😳 back during the war England helped freeing #europe , so did America, and Soviet Union (I understand #bornholm might see that differently, other story)…But now…well…you know 🤷🏼‍♂️ #england can’t leave EU quick enough 🤔, USA is on a completely different ride and Germany 🇩🇪 / France are working together to save the European Union from falling apart. I will forever be #thankful for what the UK/USA/Soviet Union did…without you…the world would have looked even stranger…. but guys…I kinda miss you nowadays, please don’t go too far 😂😂😂😂🤷🏼‍♂️🙏🏻😉 on another note yet the same, how will the world look in 75 years from now, the future be, if we do not stop up and make the right decisions??? That’s the big question… as a father to a little girl ❤️ I promise you I will do my best to make it safe, well and healthy ☺️🙏🏻 if we pull together, hopefully it’s not too late!!! . #never #forget #the #past #if #you #wanna #understand #the #future #midnightmelancholia

Nikolaj, too, felt grateful for the forces that defended Denmark then from Nazi tyranny. He wrote:

“Today we remember and are grateful for the people who stood up and defended our freedom and democracy against the Nazi tyranny. May 4th 1945 ended the darkest years in Denmark.”

Well, isn’t it great to see two co-stars sharing the same history and being grateful for it?  On the work front too Nikolaj’s Danish film got many international deals.

We congratulate Denmark and the Danish people on the landmark day. You can do the same; the comment section is all yours!

Iain Glen (Jorah) almost played Nite Owl in a shelved 2003 Watchmen movie

Iain Glen was the original Night Owl in the shelved Watchmen movie

They say destinies are beyond our control. Well, if you will read our latest story you will know why. Zack Snyder’s film Watchmen hit the theatres in 2009 and years later we have found a Game of Thrones connection to that film. Confused? Well, don’t be. Read on to find out more!

As per Winter is coming, long before Patrick Wilson donned the hat of Nite Owl in Snyder’s film, Iain Glen a.k.a. Ser Jorah Mormont was supposed to. Unfortunately for him and for a lot of his fans, the film was shelved and never saw the light of the day.

However, now we have struck gold and found the test footage of the 2003 film. That film was going to be made by David Hayter and somehow that footage has now landed on the internet.

How about that? Did you like the suave looking nerdy Glen? After having seen what we saw in Game of Thrones it would have been such a different role for Glen. Unfortunately, Hayter could only make the film as far as that.

While the comparisons with the eventual released Watchmen can continue for an eternity, we can say for sure that we as an audience missed out on a fine performance.

Good thing for HBO is that their mini-series on the same subject earned them some great acclaim and solid viewings. While Glen may not have got the chance to wear the superhero costume as yet he was truly a hero in the HBO’s epic saga. He after all shot for Thrones while his wife had a brain hemorrhage.

What did you make of the footage? Talk to us in the comments below!
