‘Makes Not a Whit of Sense’ - GRRM denies that he has completed the last two books

Game Of Thrones fans went into a frenzy when the news that George R. R. Martin has finished writing the last two books – “The Winds of Winter” & “A Dream of Spring” started circulating online. The news also said that although the books were finished, the author had agreed not to publish them till the HBO show wrapped up. Actor Ian McElhinney, who played the role of Ser Barristan Selmy in the show had made these claims at a convention. Jump to 31 mins to watch the part where he talks about the last two books.

Martin, however, debunked this news on his blog. On the blog post titled “Idiocy on the Internet“, he wrote –

“I will, however, say for the record — no, THE WINDS OF WINTER and A DREAM OF SPRING are not finished. DREAM is not even begun; I am not going to start writing volume seven until I finish volume six.”

He also went on the record to say that this whole news “makes not a whit of sense“.

“Why would I sit for years on completed novels? Why would my publishers — not just here in the US, but all around the world — ever consent to this? They make millions and millions of dollars every time a new Ice & Fire book comes out, as do I. Delaying makes no sense. Why would HBO want the books delayed? The books help create interest in the show, just as the show creates interest in the books.”

“So… no, the books are not done. HBO did not ask me to delay them. Nor did David & Dan. There is no “deal” to hold back on the books. I assure you, HBO and David & Dan would both have been thrilled and delighted if THE WINDS OF WINTER had been delivered and published four or five years ago… and NO ONE would have been more delighted than me.”

The blog post ended with a note –

“I have said it before: don’t believe everything you read on the internet. Except here, of course.”

George R. R. Martin discusses Game of Thrones finale, says the books will and will not have a similar ending

After nearly a decade of work being put in, Game of Thrones ended this Sunday. Season 8 episode 6 — “The Iron Throne” rounded up a lot of loose ends from the show, and while it might not have pleased everyone, it was still a fitting end for the show that has had us on the hook for such a long time. Now, of course, everybody is interested in knowing what creator George R. R. Martin has to think of the end and whether the book ending will be any different. These are exactly the questions that he addressed in a blog post on his website, recently. Read on!

George wrote a blog post on his Not a Blog recently, titled “An Ending“, talking about the end of Game of Thrones. George dabbled in nostalgia in the post, talking about how he asked David and Dan who Jon Snow’s mother was, in their first meeting, and they knew the right answer. He also went on to appreciate the showrunners, the cast and the crew for working so hard on the show. He revealed his future plans, saying he was working on five shows with the HBO, some of which are not about Westeros. He then went on to discuss his plans with the books, specifically:

“And I’m writing. Winter is coming, I told you, long ago… and so it is. THE WINDS OF WINTER is very late, I know, I know, but it will be done. I won’t say when, I’ve tried that before, only to burn you all and jinx myself… but I will finish it, and then will come A DREAM OF SPRING.

How will it all end? I hear people asking. The same ending as the show? Different?

Well… yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes.”

He then gave us a glimpse of what to expect from the books:

“I am working in a very different medium than David and Dan, never forget. They had six hours for this final season. I expect these last two books of mine will fill 3000 manuscript pages between them before I’m done… and if more pages and chapters and scenes are needed, I’ll add them. And of course the butterfly effect will be at work as well; those of you who follow this Not A Blog will know that I’ve been talking about that since season one. There are characters who never made it onto the screen at all, and others who died in the show but still live in the books… so if nothing else, the readers will learn what happened to Jeyne Poole, Lady Stoneheart, Penny and her pig, Skahaz Shavepate, Arianne Martell, Darkstar, Victarion Greyjoy, Ser Garlan the Gallant, Aegon VI, and a myriad of other characters both great and small that viewers of the show never had the chance to meet. And yes, there will be unicorns… of a sort…”

He also ridiculed the idea of fans asking which one the “real ending” will be:

“Book or show, which will be the “real” ending? It’s a silly question. How many children did Scarlett O’Hara have? How about this? I’ll write it. You read it. Then everyone can make up their own mind, and argue about it on the internet.”

Well, the man said it himself. Maybe we should stop complaining now and enjoy what Game of Thrones did for us. What do you guys think? Talk to us in the comments, down below!
