Starbucks got $2.3 billion worth of free advertising from the Game of Thrones appearance

In the age of the internet, the adage “There’s no such thing as bad publicity” is more relevant than ever before. We got to see this happen in real time as Game of Thrones managed to leave a Starbucks cup in the shot in Season 8 episode 4, “The Last of the Starks“. It has now been estimated that this little goof got Starbucks a whopping $2.3 billion in free advertising, and the cup didn’t even actually belong to Starbucks! Read on.

Game of Thrones aired the episode on Sunday, and pretty soon the fans noticed the cup, and the goof went viral. Becoming an instant meme, it was addressed with humour by Starbucks and HBO, both. An executive producer on the show, Bernie Caulfield, even apologized for the goof and joked that Starbucks should give them money. The cup was actually from the show’s craft services. HBO was quick to edit it out, but all the buzz had already been created.

CEO of marketing company Hollywood Branded, Stacy Jones, estimated that the whole buzz got Starbucks a free advertisement jackpot worth $2.3 billion, judging by the 10627 mentions of this incident online, as well as on TV and Radio, according to data by Critical Mention. She said:

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime collision of opportunity for Starbucks. But really, this is just the tip of the iceberg, because what isn’t being monitored or estimated is the word of mouth and social media on top of this.”

Another analytics firm, Talkwalker, also charted 193,000 mentions of the goof within 48 hours of the episode airing. In either case, Starbucks walked out of this looking pretty slick. What do you guys think? Talk to us in the comments, down below!

A report by The Wall Street Journal says that the finale of the show garnered a record viewership of 19.3 million viewers, including the live TV viewership, and streaming viewership from HBO Go and HBO Now. The live TV views accounted for 13.6 million of those views.

This not only make the episode the most watched Game of Thrones episode of all time, but also makes it the most viewed HBO episode in history, standing above some pretty great television.

Season 8 has consistently broken the viewership records for the show, starting right from the premiere. The last episode of the show being the most watched is quite fitting, given Game of Thrones had been HBO’s poster child for a long time now.

HBO releases photos from the series finale of Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones did it again. The series finale — Season 8 episode 6, “The Iron Throne” aired today, giving the show an epic conclusion. However, there was one tiny fault. They forgot a couple of water bottle in the frame. Read on!

After the last goof where a coffee cup was spotted in the frame, leading to $2.3 billion of free advertising for Starbucks, you would think something like it wouldn’t happen again. However, in today’s episode, two water bottles managed to make its way into the scene.

Both the bottles were spotted in the Dragonpit scene, where Tyrion is brought for a trial in front of all the lords and ladies of Westeros. The first bottle seemed to find its way to this very reputable company, sneaking right next to John Bradley’s leg. Looks like Samwell Tarly was thirsty. The second water bottle was next to Liam Cunningham’s leg. He played Ser Davos on the show. Take a look:

Well, at least it wasn’t as up and front as the coffee cup. The fans still managed to spot it, as eagle-eyed as they are. HBO is yet to comment on this goof.

Emilia’s performance as Daenerys has been magnificent over the years, and in the latest episode, we saw her character take the Mad Queen turn, extracting a performance from Emilia that was stellar, no matter how the episode was received. Finding the words to write this post has left me overwhelmed with how much I want to say but how small words feel in comparison to what this show and Dany have meant to me. The mother of dragons chapter has taken up the whole of my adult life. This woman has taken up the whole of my heart. I’ve sweated in the blaze of dragon fire, shed many tears at those who left our family early, and wrung my brain dry trying to do Khaleesi and the masterful words, actions (and names) I was given, justice. Game of Thrones has shaped me as a woman, as an actor and as a human being. I just wish my darling dad was here now to see how far we’ve flown. But to you, dear kind magical fans, I owe you so much thanks, for your steady gaze at what we’ve made and what I’ve done with a character that was already in the hearts of many before I slipped on the platinum wig of dreams. Without you there is no us. And now our watch has ended. @gameofthrones @hbo #love #motherofdragonsoverandout

She shared a picture with all her co-stars in costume, one with the stars and the showrunners, chilling, one of her beautiful braided wig, and a selfie.

She reflected upon how the character has shaped her and thanked the fans for watching and loving her. She also wished that her father could see all that she has achieved.

Well, we’re sure he would be proud of her. Game of Thrones series finale airs in a few hours. Are you ready? Talk to us in the comments, down below!
