Game Of Thrones fans criticize Sansa Stark’s ‘little bird’ moment that glorifies her abusive past

Sansa Stark and Sandor Clegane’s brief reunion scene in Season 8 Episode 4 ‘The Last of the Starks’ has sparked a lot of criticism and debate on social media. In the scene, Hound and Sansa talk about the traumatic experiences she went through (with Ramsay and Littlefinger) after they parted ways. Some fans are saying the scene glorifies women’s traumatic and abusive experiences as a character-shaping factor. Read on!

Sansa meets Sandor in the Winterfell celebrations and they talk about her abuse in the hands of Ramsay. The Hound remarks, “None of it would have happened if you left King’s Landing with me. No Littlefinger, no Ramsay, none of it.” He is referring to Season 2 episode ‘Blackwater’ when he had offered Sansa to take her to Winterfell but she refused. Sansa responds by taking Sandor’s hand and saying, “Without Ramsay and Littlefinger and the rest, I’d have stayed a ‘little bird’ all my life.”

Some fans are angry that Sansa's 'little bird' line in episode 4 glorifies her abusive past

Many fans thought this line plays into the idea that women’s growth is somehow connected to their being traumatized, and implies that it is not possible to become a powerful and resourceful woman without going through horrible abuse. Many took to Twitter to express their disappointment.

But some other fans had a very different take, including some who have had experienced abuse before. They point out, they would probably say the same, as a way of owning the narrative and boosting their own confidence.

That said, female representation on Game of Thrones has continued to come under fire for some time now. Sansa’s meeting with Bran in Season 7 had focused only on her abuse. In this scene also, Hound immediately starts talking about Sansa’s abusive past as if it is the most natural thing to discuss with a woman you see after many years.

It seems the makers themselves are suggesting that Sansa’s current strong and powerful persona would not have been possible without the trauma and abuse. That is both problematic and very much out-of-character for Sansa, who has been portrayed as naive but smart and a quick learner in the early seasons. Maybe the Game of Thrones team could indeed have done with some women writers, eh?

This is something that actually bugged me about J. K. Rowling. Years and years ago (before she came up with that “love protection spell”) thing, back when there were only two or so Harry Potter books I remember she was asked about why Harry had to live with the Dursley’s and at the time the answer she gave was “It keeps him humble.” As if child abuse is the only way to keep a famous child from becoming a brat??!?

Of course it’s not what she was saying. People either grow from difficult experiences or they fall because of them. Sometimes we all have to fall in order to grow and learn.

We all grow because of our experiences. People are looking too hard to be offended.

This is the most BS crap I have ever heard. Sansa is just making the best of her situation and the writers are acknowledging her struggle. They aren’t saying “women need to be abused to grow.” Good grief. However I will agree with the others that said abuse can make you stronger. Its a common thread in life in general. “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” anyone?

Having been a survivor of sexual assault this is not what I took from the encounter. To me all she was saying is that “she is a survivor and from that she become stronger as a person”…please lets also remember this is a fictional character!!

New photo shows Naomi Watts in costume for Game of Thrones prequel, Bloodmoon

Game of Thrones is over, and now it’s time for Bloodmoon. The Game of Thrones prequel has been under production for a while, with the pilot being ordered by HBO. We have been getting small bits of information about the show, mostly the locations. Today we have what is possibly the first look at one of the stars of the show, Naomi Watts, in her character costume for the show. Read on!

We don’t have character details yet, but Naomi Watts was known to be cast in a role that was said to be of “a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.” Today, a fan posted a picture of the actress in what is possibly her Bloodmoon character costume. Take a look:

While it isn’t the highest quality picture, there is one glaring clue that hints at the authenticity of the picture. We know the prequel is filming in Northern Ireland, and we recently reported about filming also going on in at the Grotta del Turco, near Gaeta, Italy. This picture shows the signboard arc reading “Grotta del”, which means the photo is likely to be authentic.

She seems to have a very Cersei-like aura. George R. R. Martin recently revealed that the show doesn’t have Lannisters, at the beginning at least. If this is a hint that they show up later, there’s a good chance Naomi might be playing Lann the Clever, the founder of House Lannister. Martin has confirmed the Casterlys hold the Casterly Rock at the beginning of the show, so it’s not too far fetched that we might see House Lannister show up and take over.
