Game Of Thrones showrunners on how the Battle of Winterfell was brought to life

Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 3 ‘The Long Night’ featured the biggest battle sequence in TV history. Shot through 55 nights of filming in extremely inhospitable conditions, this was truly a magnum opus which took a tremendous amount of work and dedication by the cast and crew. In an “Inside the Episode video published by HBO, the makers talk about how this cinematic feat was brought to life.

At a length of 1 hour and 18 minutes, it was also one of the longest Game of Thrones episodes, so structuring it was a massive challenge for the team. Showrunner and executive producer David Benioff explained the process:

“Because it’s such a long battle in this episode, it is important that we feel the ebb and flow.”

Here are some of the more critical moments from the episode, and how they were constructed.

End of the Dothraki

If you had any doubt about whether this is the end of the Dothraki army, the showrunners firmly dispel those. According to them, what we saw in the episode was “the end of the Dothraki, essentially.”

David and Dan explain,

“We felt like it was important to have that moment of hope … We wanted our characters to feel like maybe this is all gonna work out, maybe things are all gonna be okay.”

When Melisandre came out of nowhere and a thousand arakhs lit up in the dark, even we thought things might be okay for a while. But that was not to be. As Daenerys and Jon watched from the hill, the flaming army rushed in like a wave and was extinguished one by one, in one of the most bone-chilling moments of the episode.

The plan gone wrong

photos-from-Game-Of-Thrones-Season-8-Episode-3-The-Long-Night

The end of Dothraki was a hard blow to all, but most of all to Dany. They represent a considerable chunk of her military might, and they followed her into an alien continent which they never wanted to come to in the first place. “Dany can’t bring herself to just watch them die,” says Weiss. And this leads to the second movement of the episode – when the ‘plan’ starts to fall apart.

The plan. if we remember, was to wait for the Night King to appear and then Jon and Dany attack Viserion together. Maybe then they would have a better chance at defeating the wight dragon. But Dany responded to the urgency of the moment, and Jon followed suit, ultimately leaving him far from the Godswood when the Night King finally came for Bran. However, the Dragonfire plan wasn’t going to work anyway, as Dany’s last attempt showed.

The battles within the battle

Multiple storylines are playing out all through the battle – Jon and Dany on the sky, Northmen and the Unsullied on the ground, Brienne and Jaime on the ramparts, Arya, Beric and Hound within the castle, and Tyrion-Sansa in the crypts. The castle interior, especially, was used to maximize the horror of the situation. David says,

“We always talked about Winterfell as kind of the home for the show … these hallways and rooms where we spent a lot of good times … has now become a horror set because it’s been invaded by these undead soldiers.”

There’s another kind of contrast at play here, between the open battle and the hallway chase sequences. Weiss says, “You have this giant wide open space and everywhere you look there’s something that could be coming to kill you. [But] once you get inside Winterfell everything contracts … something is there in the dark with you but you don’t exactly where it is.”

The secret assassin

There has been some criticism about the fact that Arya seems to appear from nowhere in the last scene. But the showrunners say that was completely intentional. They purposefully shifted the attention from Arya after Melisandre tells her about the “blue eyes” she will shut and she sprints from the room.

We do not see Arya for the rest of the episode and get invested in the other storylines until in the very last moment she sneaks in behind the Night King. Benioff and Weiss explain the decision behind having Arya deliver that fatal blow:

“She seemed like the best candidate provided we weren’t thinking about her at the moment … We hoped to kind of avoid the expected and Jon Snow has always been the hero, the one who’s been the saviour, but it just didn’t seem right to us for this moment.”

The White Walkers and the undead army have been one of the principle storylines of Game of Thrones, right from the very first scene of the show. The Living versus Dead showdown has been coming along for a long time, and this video puts into perspective how difficult it was for the Living to triumph finally.

The episode started with a shocked Tyrion, Jon Snow and Davos walking through King’s Landing and seeing the destruction that was caused by Daenerys Targaryen. She didn’t spare anyone and we saw that the Unsullied were still unsatisfied and they continued executing Lannister soldiers in the latest episode. In the span of one episode, Daenerys and her army turned from heroes to villains.

Daenerys finally conquered King’s Landing and had a big Targaryen sigil banner hanging prominently on a wall and it reminded me of the time when Daenerys captured Meereen and her soldiers did the same at the top of the Great Pyramid.

Jon and Grey Worm had an argument and for a moment it felt as if there would be a fight between the Unsullied and Stark soldiers.

HBO releases photos from the series finale of Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones has been having a wild run this season, with so much happening in such a short time that the fandom has been having a tough time catching up. In Season 8, episode 5, “The Bells“, we saw Daenerys Targaryen finally snap, as she took on Cersei and King’s Landing. Now, HBO has released pictures from the final episode of the show. Read on!

These sets usually have at least half a dozen to a dozen pictures, but this time it looks like Game of Thrones doesn’t want to reveal much more than what it did in the preview trailer of the episode. There are only two pictures in the set, showing Daenerys Targaryen, in her new reign as the Mad Queen, and Tyrion Lannister, carrying his worries about the former. Check them out:

Kit Harington gets emotional in Game of Thrones: The Last Watch Documentary Trailer

We had previously reported that a full-length documentary about the making of Game of Throne’s magnificent last season is in the making. And now the trailer for it is also here. Game of Thrones: The Last Watch will be aired on HBO at 9 pm (US) on 26th May, exactly a week after the Season 8 finale.

Watch the trailer here:

The almost two-hour documentary has been directed by veteran documentary filmmaker Jeanie Finlay and has been made with an unprecedented level of access. The trailer gives us a peek into the table read for the final season with the entire cast, in-depth interviews with the cast and crew, and a hint of the technical depths and logistic heights that the wildly ambitious scale of the eight and final season of Game of Thrones demanded.

With just one episode to go before Game of Thrones ends forever, The Last Watch should give the fans a little something to wait for beyond 19th May.

Would you be watching the documentary? Tell us in the comments!
