‘Winter is Here’ – that’s a slogan in the contemporary Westerosi world but has taken a long time to get to our television screen this time. Talking about the new season of Game of Thrones – the last we heard from it was when the first official teaser Dragonstone was released. Yet, we have never left for more as the new season of Game of Thrones arrives in less than 70 days which is on April 14.
While we wait for the first official trailer of full-length to drop sometime around March – confirmed by a reliable source (James Hibberd from Entertainment Weekly), HBO has just dropped 15 new promotional photos from Game of Thrones Season 8. And, I strongly do believe that these images are from the very first episode. Let’s take a look and speculate.
#1. Bran and Samwell Tarly
Let’s start off with the promotional pics of Samwell Tarly and Bran Stark – who in the last season had teamed up to uncover the lineage of Jon Snow. Both these characters are shown inside Winterfell rather than the other characters that either seems to be in the Great Hall or in the corridor/battlements.
This is Sam inside Winterfell – with a smile bobbed up on his face! What/who is he looking at and what’s the reason for his smile? I believe that either he’s looking at Gilly and Baby Sam or Bran Stark as they uncover another big truth – this time about the Long Night.
Here’s Bran Stark or The Three-Eyed Raven inside his chambers in Winterfell, looking all concerned probably, about the threat of the others. Or is this the continuation of the scene of his with Samwell Tarly in Episode 1. Or there’s probably both of these characters are together – their first meeting with Jon Snow! Is this when Bran discloses Jon’s secret to him? There’s a third probability though – Bran’s cold meeting with Jaime Lannister. There’s so much to look forward to!
#2. Some people in the great hall
While some photos were of the Winterfell battlements/courtyard and two from the North, some pictures evidently show characters like Ser Davos, Brienne, Sansa, and others in the Great Hall of Winterfell. Maybe, after welcoming Jon and Daenerys to the North, all main characters are rallied in the Great Hall to discuss the plans for the Great War.
Sansa being the lady of Winterfell presides over the meeting at the Great Hall of Winterfell. Look closely to her right, someone is sitting in Stark furs – most probably Jon Snow. This widely reminds me of the meeting in the Great Hall we had in the first episode of Season Seven.
Ser Davos is seated in the Great Hall too – looking all concerned maybe because they just got the news of the Wall being breached by the others. On his right, you can also see an Unsullied soldier standing. May the Onion Knight live long!
Brienne of Tarth is in the Great Hall too with Unsullied by her side. Daenerys is obviously in this meeting – I’m sure of that. Brienne is giving a glance to someone maybe, Jaime or Daenerys who is addressing the lords of the North.
Ser Jaime Lannister in the Great Hall, or is he at an inn in Riverrun – there’s a whole lot of speculation here! Look at his attire – common armour like the one Sandor Clegane once wore and we have even seen Robb Stark in a similar armour.
The smile on Jaime’s face – maybe he shared a glance with Brienne at Winterfell.
Daenerys in the Great Hall of Winterfell too and a change in her attire – from the white furs we saw in the teaser and on the cover image of EW. Maybe, she is addressing the lords of the North and I can’t figure out why she seems so contended.
#3. People in the courtyard/ Winterfell battlements
Arya stands amongst the lords of the North, probably while welcoming Jon and Daenerys in the opening scene for season 8. She has her weapons – Needle and Catspaw dagger with her and she is in the same clothes we saw her in the last season. But, what is she looking at and what does that grim look mean?
Jon in the courtyard while he arrives with his aunt/love interest Dany at Winterfell or maybe somewhat later in the episode as we see people around him in action. Who is he looking at?
Lord Varys in the courtyard of Winterfell as he stares at someone. Look at the change in his clothing – he is wearing more Targaryen like colours and I’m telling you – he’s replacing Littlefinger this time!
Tyrion is standing on the battlements where we have seen characters like Ned and Catelyn, Jon and Sansa, and Sansa and Arya having small talks. He according to me is having small talks with someone like Sansa – discussing their sham marriage. There’s a considerable change in his outfit as well.
#4. Jon and Dany in Godswood / Somewhere in the North
Here are Jon and Daenerys who are in the same outfit as the one we had seen on the front cover of Entertainment Weekly’s December edition. The lovebirds/aunt-nephew shares a glance in the snow.
The second one seems to be a continuation of the first image – seems to me like Jon has suddenly told Dany the Truth and she seems concerned.
#5. Cersei Lannister at King’s Landing
Cersei Lannister on the Iron Throne – the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. She has changed her outfit a bit – dressed in black but an additional gold armour on her shoulders. She here is either talking to someone like Harry Strickland from Golden Company who has come to meet her or just discussing her plans with Qyburn.
Cersei in a standing posture at King’s Landing – nothing new about it, except some fans noticed a bump on her belly. At this point, she is pregnant – like she told Jaime and Tyrion. Well, I have no thoughts on that!
So, these were my thoughts and speculation on the first promotional images released by HBO. What were your thoughts? Did we miss out anything? Tell us in the comments.
Here’s a list of all the Game of Thrones references in Lucifer
Lucifer Season 6 is finally out! The comic book/supernatural based hit series came to an emotional end on September 10 this year with the release of its final season. The show paid a lot of homages to various pop culture icons, including Game of Thrones. Let’s have a look at all the times Game of Thrones was referenced by various characters on Lucifer.
Season 3 Episode 14
Cain aka Marcus Pierce (Tom Welling) has been roaming the earth for thousands of years. He’s tired of losing his loved ones due to an immortality curse placed on him by God. After a long and bloody skirmish with Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside), he says and believes he has ‘nothing to live for‘. Amenadiel replies, “Have you tried Game of Thrones?”
Season 4 Episode 8
Lucifer is dealing with his emotional issues, after getting back with his ex Eve (Inbar Lavi). Chloe (Lauren German) tells Lucifer about a prophecy, that apocalyptic events will occur on earth and Hell will freeze over if Lucifer meets his true love. To which he replies, “Perhaps winter is coming.”
Season 5 Episode 9
God (Dennis Haysbert) is on earth and organizes a small family reunion at Linda’s (Rachael Harris) house. Lucifer considers himself the smartest in the family, much like Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones. He drags the chair to sit at the other head of the table in an equal position to his father. Tyrion does something similar at the small council in King’s Landing.
Season 5 Episode 16
Michael and Lucifer (both played by Tom Ellis) have agreed to decide who will be the new God of their universe, by a poll that Lucifer is most likely to lose. All the angels show up at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, and Michael is wearing a special medieval warrior-like attire for the occasion. Lucifer mocks him for his poor fashion sense, asking him “Is winter coming or something?”
Season 5 Episode 16
Lucifer and Michael are locking horns for a final showdown, because Michael is willing to kill those who won’t obey him. In a dramatic and long-drawn-out battle, Lucifer defeats Michael with Chloe’s help. He orders him to stand down and ‘bend the knee’, and then goes on to cut off his wings. “Bend the knee” is frequently used by Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, whenever she subdues an enemy.

Legendary Valyrian Steel Swords to look out for in House of The Dragon: Part 2
Valyrian Steel Swords are very priceless and magical weapons that are possessed by very few. By the time of Game of Thrones, we see only a handful of individuals who have access to them. But 300 years ago, during the events of House of the Dragon, they were much more in number.
We have seen a few of them in HBO’s TV adaptation of Game of Thrones. But there will be a lot more in the prequel show House of The Dragon. There have been about 227 Valyrian steel swords that have been recorded in the history of Westeros, most of them have been lost or destroyed. Let’s have a look at a few of them that might make an appearance in House of The Dragon. We covered a few of them in the previous article, here’s the link. Do check it out!
Lamentation was a famed Valyrian steel sword that belonged to House Royce. Ser Willam Royce wielded the blade during the Dance of the Dragons. The sword was torn from the hand of Willam, however, when he was killed during the Ride of the Seven. With Willam’s death, the sword was carried off, never to be found again. However, some rumours claim that Ser Warrick Wheaton slashed a wing off of Syrax with a Valyrian steel sword, likely Lamentation, during the Storming of the Dragonpit.
Dark Sister is a famous longsword of Valyrian steel. It is one of two ancestral swords of House Targaryen. Dark Sister had a slender blade originally designed for a woman’s hand. It was wielded by Visenya Targaryen during Aegon’s conquest of Westeros. During the Dance of the Dragons, it was the prime weapon of choice for Prince Daemon Targaryen. Dark Sister was lost when the last wielder of the sword, Brynden Rivers, went missing beyond the Wall in 252 AC.
Longclaw is the ancestral Valyrian steel sword of House Mormont. It is the same sword Jeor Mormont gifts to Jon Snow at the Night’s Watch in Game of Thrones. The Mormonts supported the Starks in their allegiance with Rhaenyra Targaryen during the Dance of the Dragons.
Lady Forlorn is the ancestral longsword made of Valyrian steel belonging to House Corbray. The sword has a heart-shaped ruby in its pommel and its blade is smokey-grey in appearance. Ser Corwyn Corbray wielded Lady Forlorn during the Dance of the Dragons. It was in the possession of Ser Lyn Corbray in Game of Thrones.

Legendary Valyrian Steel Swords to look out for in House of The Dragon: Part 1
Valyrian steel swords have always been a source of fascination for the fans of Game of Thrones. Made of a fictional metal in the ancient land of Valyria, not many such weapons survive since its doom. They are very rare, priceless, magic-infused and are often passed down as family heirlooms.
Vigilance is a Valyrian steel longsword belonging to House Hightower. It was last wielded by Ormund Hightower during the Dance of the Dragons and he fought for King Aegon II Targaryen. Ormund was slain by Roderick Dustin during the first battle of Tumbleton, after which the sword was lost forever.
Ice is the ancestral greatsword of House Stark made of Valyrian steel. It is the sword that was wielded by Ned Stark in Game of Thrones. The sword was wielded by Lord Cregan Stark during the Dance of the Dragons, who was the Warden of the North during the period. He supported Rhaenyra Targaryen due to his pledge known as the Pact of Ice and Fire.
Truth was a Valyrian steel longsword carried by Moredo Rogare, a Lysene noble from the wealthy banking Rogare family. During the Dance of the Dragons, the Rogare Bank rivalled the Iron Bank of Braavos in size. We might get a glimpse of the sword in House of The Dragon.
Orphan-Maker is a Valyrian steel longsword belonging to House Roxton with a black blade. Ser Jon Roxton wielded the blade during the Dance of the Dragons. He sided with King Aegon II Targaryen and the sword was used in the Battle of Honeywine and the second battle of Tumbleton. The sword later came into the possession of Lord Unwin Peake, after which its whereabouts are unknown.
Blackfyre is the fabled hand-and-a-half longsword of Valyrian steel once wielded by Aegon the Conqueror. It is perhaps the most famous sword in all of Westeros. Aegon II Targaryen’s possession of Blackfyre enhanced his legitimacy against his rival, Rhaenyra Targaryen, during the Dance of the Dragons. It was lost after the Blackfyre rebellion.
