Episode 7 of Game of Thrones season 6 marked the return of two important characters. The opening scene itself revealed to us ‘The Broken Man’, that is Sandor Clegane, and we also saw the return of another long-lost character, that of the Blackfish, whom we saw last in the unfortunate Red Wedding episode of season 3. Clive Russell, the actor who plays the Blackfish, while speaking to IGN discussed about his character’s mission in this season. He talks about Blackfish’s survivor’s guilt and what motivates him to ‘not run‘ this time around, along with his inner battle of being Sansa Stark’s ally or defending the Tully honour.
When he was asked about whether or not he knew that he would return after his disappearance in season 3, Clive answered, “I’d hoped that he’d come back because he comes back in the books again. But they’re not doing the books — there is no book to do it from. I’d hoped that would happen. I don’t think I was surprised it would happen because they bring back all kinds of people at all kinds of times. But it was good to go back there, I must say.”
Talking about if he was aware about the Blackfish being a fan-favourite, he said, “I kind of make the mistake when I got the part of looking on the net at what people were saying about it. It was very funny, because people were saying, “I know who could play it: Jeremy Irons!” “No, I know who could play it: David Bowie!” And it was basically [laughs], “Who the f–k is Clive Russell?” That was basically what was going on.”
On being asked about what he thinks Blackfish will do now that Catelyn is dead (if he would support the remaining Stark children or he’d rather protect House Tully), he said, “I think the truth of it is he’s fantastically conflicted about it. He obviously wants to defend his home, but he obviously feels a responsibility to what’s left of the family. And that’s definitely played out, that conflict within him.”
Revealing of what he was most excited about on his return on the show, Clive said, “The chance to, as it were, finish the story of Blackfish, or indicate where the Blackfish might go in the end. That’s pretty satisfying, rather than the mystery of him going for a pee in the Red Wedding. We know what happened now. [laughs] “Excuse me, ladies and gentlemen, I’m just going to find a tree to pee on” is a funny line, but it’s not the way you want to end your involvement in the series.”

Clive also gave his opinion about the survivor’s guilt that Blackfish would be facing when talking about how lucky he was to have left when the slaughter at the Red Wedding took place. He said, “Well that’s arguable, isn’t it? One of the other elements is that sense of survivor’s guilt, and I think Blackfish regretted running. He mentions, “I’m not going to run again.” He’s a soldier. Normally you stand and fight. Even though you look like you’re going to die, you stand and fight, and he didn’t. On the other hand, somebody had to survive. He had to go to survive to bring the family back into the center of things again, but I think there was an element of survivor’s guilt with poor old Blackfish.”
Now we’re certainly waiting to see how the Blackfish will defend his home, aren’t we?
George R. R. Martin shares a poem with fans on his 73rd birthday
George R. R. Martin is one of the most famous fantasy writers of present times. If not for him, we wouldn’t be having the amazing world of Game of Thrones, HBO’s fantasy epic based on his A Song of Ice and Fire novels. Though much of his fanbase has grown weary of him, for making them wait for the next book in the series ‘Winds of Winter’, he is still a coveted literary figure, and no one can deny his importance in the entertainment industry.
Martin turned 73 on Monday, September 20, 2021, and birthday wishes have been pouring in for the veteran writer. He shared a nice poem about getting old on his blog Not a Blog:
“I grow old… I grow old…
I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.
Shall I part my hair behind? Do I dare to eat a peach?
I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach.
I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.
I do not think that they will sing to me.
((with thanks to T.S. Eliot))”
It is true that Martin is getting old, and many fans are worried if he’ll ever get to finish his novels. However, it is also true that he has been promising fans he will deliver the much-awaited books, while he is still working on other projects. We can only hope he is true to his word.
