‘Beyond the Wall’ director Alan Taylor admits that they fudged the timeline in the latest episode

'Beyond the Wall' director Alan Taylor talks about that timeline inconsistency

Game of Thrones Season 7 is doing really well, but there is one thing the fans have been really bothered about ever since they saw Varys go from Dorne to Daenerys‘s ship, at the end of Season 6, in the same episode: timeline inconsistency. The issue has prevailed in Season 7, and we have had a lot of questions raised by the fans regarding the little fallacy that this massive spectacle of storytelling has been having. Naturally, it was bound to happen as things sped up, with the narrative needing to follow a large number of characters which have storylines that don’t run in sync, and not keeping their timelines in sync was the best way to compact it.

The inconsistency was more noticeable in the latest episode, the sixth of the seven of Season 7, titled ‘Beyond the Wall‘, which led the fans to question how Jon Snow and others survived till Gendry reached Eastwatch, a Raven was sent out to Daenerys, which reached Dragonstone, and Daenerys flew beyond the Wall with her dragons, all of which should constitute quite a lot of time. Director for the episode, Alan Taylor recently explained the whole thing, in an interview with Variety. Read on!

'Beyond the Wall' director Alan Taylor admits that they fudged the timeline in the latest episode

He addressed the issue and explained why things were done the way they were :

“We were aware that timing was getting a little hazy. We’ve got Gendry running back, ravens flying a certain distance, dragons having to fly back a certain distance…In terms of the emotional experience, [Jon and company] sort of spent one dark night on the island in terms of storytelling moments. We tried to hedge it a little bit with the eternal twilight up there north of The Wall. I think there was some effort to fudge the timeline a little bit by not declaring exactly how long we were there”

“I think that worked for some people, for other people it didn’t. They seemed to be very concerned about how fast a raven can fly but there’s a thing called plausible impossibilities, which is what you try to achieve, rather than impossible plausibilities. So I think we were straining plausibility a little bit, but I hope the story’s momentum carries over some of that stuff.”

Latest Game of Thrones episode, Beyond the Wall gave us a shocking twist in the end

He went on to talk about how the show could afford having such a flaw :

“It’s cool that the show is so important to so many people that it’s being scrutinized so thoroughly. If the show was struggling, I’d be worried about those concerns, but the show seems to be doing pretty well so it’s OK to have people with those concerns.”

What do you think? We think it’s not too bad, considering the show in relying on the audience to understand. Talk to us in the comments, down below!

George R. R. Martin shares a poem with fans on his 73rd birthday

George R. R. Martin is one of the most famous fantasy writers of present times. If not for him, we wouldn’t be having the amazing world of Game of Thrones, HBO’s fantasy epic based on his A Song of Ice and Fire novels. Though much of his fanbase has grown weary of him, for making them wait for the next book in the series ‘Winds of Winter’, he is still a coveted literary figure, and no one can deny his importance in the entertainment industry.

Martin turned 73 on Monday, September 20, 2021, and birthday wishes have been pouring in for the veteran writer. He shared a nice poem about getting old on his blog Not a Blog:

George R. R. Martin shares a poem with fans on his 73rd birthday

I grow old… I grow old…

I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.

Shall I part my hair behind? Do I dare to eat a peach?

I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach.

I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.

I do not think that they will sing to me.

((with thanks to T.S. Eliot))”

It is true that Martin is getting old, and many fans are worried if he’ll ever get to finish his novels. However, it is also true that he has been promising fans he will deliver the much-awaited books, while he is still working on other projects. We can only hope he is true to his word.
