Game of Thrones is currently filming for Season 7, which is set to premiere in the summer of 2017. Season 6 ended with winter finally descending upon the seven kingdoms, and we are now facing the final two seasons of the series. Like any other fandom, the Game of Thrones fandom too has started looking for the possibility of a prequel or a spin-off, once the series ends. The good news is that HBO has actually had talks about the same. While on the Television Critics Association press tour for 2017, HBO programming president Casey Bloys managed to give us a few bits about the same.

In a report by Variety, Bloys talked about how it would be a mistake to not to anything to follow up Game of Thrones :

“All I can say is that we’re exploring it. We don’t have any scripts, we’re not even close to saying ‘Oh let’s do this.’ But it’s a big enough property that we would be foolish not to explore it. It’s a really rich world. We’d be foolish not to look at it.”

Bloys has a point. George R. R. Martin, author of A Song of Ice and Fire books, on which Game of Thrones is based, has already expressed his interest in writing more stories set in the same universe, in addition to the plenty of stories that already exist. Game of Thrones has been HBO’s star child, and it would definitely be stupid to try not to milk it further.

Bloys, however, isn’t yet fully set on it, for reasons we can understand. He says :

“I’m not going to do it just to do it. It has to feel very special. I would rather have no sequel and leave it as-is then have something we rushed out.”

A prequel feels like it has less pressure on it [than a spin-off]. [Author George R.R. Martin’s history of Westeros] gives you areas in which to say to a writer, ‘If you were going to do this, then go flesh it out,’ and we’ll see what comes back. But I don’t feel any pressure that we have to have something.

The possibilities, of course, are endless. Imagine getting to know the history of the Game of Thrones universe, understanding how things were before the events of the series. A prequel would definitely make more sense, considering how the series has always referenced events in the past, HBO will have the heightened interest of the fana to begin with!
