Game of Thrones season 7, with it’s unbearably long wait and mysterious nature, has made a lot of us go crazy wondering what’s going to happen next, since we’re out of books to give us details as well. Recent news about the casting for season 7 having begun gave us a lot to talk about. In one our previous posts, we discussed the characters that are required for casting next season, and since there were only character traits specified instead of names, we didn’t quite know whom the writers are looking for as of now.
However, we can surely make our guesses based on the character descriptions provided by HBO. One of these characters is that of a “young lord” in his late 20s. Fans on Reddit explored this particular character in detail, and came to the conclusion that it might be none other than Rhaegar Targaryen, Daenerys Targaryen’s long dead brother, and the father of Jon Snow (or Targaryen, whichever floats your boat). The character being Rhaegar seems to be making a lot of sense, based on the description, which goes like this:
Young Lord in his late 20’s. He’s a tall, handsome young lord, and the show is looking for a white actor who uses the RP accent. He’s scheduled to shoot in the week commencing September 20th.
Now for those of you who aren’t aware of what this Targaryen hottie looks like, he’s a fairly handsome fellow, with the usual attractive Targaryen silver hair, and he’s described as ‘beautiful’ in the books. Rhaegar was quite young when he supposedly kidnapped Lyanna Stark. Although we don’t have a conclusion to rest upon entirely, we do know that there were two possibilities surrounding the whole Rhaegar-Lyanna business. One of them was that Rhaegar kidnapped Lyanna, which led to a war where Ned Stark, about a year later, meets his sister Lyanna on her deathbed when she’s just given birth to a boy (we saw this in season 6 during Bran Stark’s time travel). The other scenario is where Lyanna willingly ran away with Rhaegar, and he was then killed by Robert Baratheon.
Now that we know Jon Snow’s true parents are Rhaegar and Lyanna, and Ned Stark only hid Jon’s true identity to keep him safe from Robert killing all Targaryens from opposing his rule, this could mean that season 7 has Bran take us back into time to witness the truth about Rhaegar and Lyanna, and whether Ned’s sister was truly captured.
